Have a look at these stats please

Was round at a friends house and found an ancient old phone hardwired into the back of a junction box and a sky box unfiltered was the cause of him syncing at about 500k and a profile of 228k

He is now synced at 3.9Mbs and I've told him the profile will increase in 3 days or so.

Should he expect any more than the 3.9 with these stats (obtained from master test socket with all extensions disconnected)

Output Power 12 up 19 down
Attenuation 20.5 up 38 down
SNR 21.0 up 15.5 down

I would have thought with that SNR he would have connected quicker, but wasnt sure on the theory regarding output power and attenuation.

38 attenuation should get over 6M. Try it without the sky box connected to anything (including the mains).

Does it still have a high SNR on a restart ? May have got cranked up to a 15 dB margin on account of previous bad behaviour.

If its rock solid the target margin may come down over an extended period, otherwise ISP intervention or a router where you can bend the SNR (speedtouch 5x6 etc) may be required.

Hi, cheers for the quick reply. I'll get him to try and connect with sky unplugged. 1 thing I'm working on is getting him to ditch the Frog USB modem in place of a router.
The fact he is connecting / reconnecting as the PC goes on and off surely can't be much use for a rate adaptive service?

routers do add stability by staying on the line.

Should I tell him to leave his PC on for the next few days. And is it worth reconnecting the modem at various times during the day other than on in the morning and off at night?

No need really. The system generates an event each time the modem syncs and an automatic "heartbeat" overnight if its on 24/7. Switching on and off is only a problem if the thing struggles to connect or the sync rate varies wildly.

He connected this morning at 4.5Mb so it's gone up again but his profile is showing 500k. I reckon we'll give it to the weekend for the profile to rise, then try and contact his ISP and see if they can lift it manually,

[EDIT] Just got some more info today. the cable for his USB modem is a bit dodgy and movment around the desk causes it cut off occasionally. Would these sudden disconnections be causing the low profile as well as the unfiltered sky box which has been resolved. How many random disconnections does the system allow before deciding to drop the profile in a bid to maintain a stable line. Also, would switching the PC (and hence the modem) off when it is not in use also cause the system to class this as a disconnect. It could be switched on and off 4 or 5 times during the day.

Ten disconnects an hour is generally considered to be the point at which the DLM decides the line is unstable. Can you persuade him to move to a router, rather than just repair or replace the modem? That way, the PC doesn't come into the equation.
