BT Line speed

As anyone else had the problem, with extra sockets and line speed, I was suffering a slow connection for some time and after long talks technical support suggested it could be a fault on the house wiring disconnect all extentions up went the line speed. check the wiring I could find no fault. However i had the wiring checked by and ex BT engineer he found no fault.

But whenever we connected the extention wiring up the line speed dropped the more wire and sockets the lower the speed.

He then checked his own speed and again when the extention circuits were disconnected up went the line speed, even connected direct to the line by removing the master socket cover made a diffrence.

I moved the extention wiring to after the ADSL which is plugged direct into the master socket, some speed reduction but not 1.2 meg which was the amount of spped loss with all the wiring connected.

Anyone else had similar problems?

very common, usually down to the 3rd wire on the extension wiring picking up noise but can also be down to unfiltered or inadequately filtered things on the line.

This is very common with extension wiring. If you get yourself a filtered faceplate to go on the master socket rather than using microfilters, that will give you the best results. Check out ADSL Nation's XTE-2005.

That really only helps a lot if you plug the router directly into the master socket. Adding ADSL (unfiltered) extensions will bring you back to square one.

I find that if you remove the ring wire the extensions effect is vastly diminished and sometimes its a convenient setup. In one case the extension wiring prevented any sync on a max product, the test socket gave 2700 or so but with the extensions added minus the ring wire that fell to 2300-2500. Putting the router on the far end of the extensions it connected at 1900-2000.

Unfiltered extensions that are just a single pair need not be a complete death knell - my router's on one at 7616 sync 35 dB attenuation (interleaved).

Of course, the ring wire will always pick up more noise because it is an unbalanced leg, and I suspect the impedance of this wire is higher too, which could also play a part. Adding extra unfiltered wiring always presents the risk of noise increase, and how much extra you get will depend on other factors within the house. I have a wired alarm system which sends pulses down the wiring even when the alarm is not armed - this acts as a nice noise radiator in my house on unfiltered extensions.
