Help req making sense of Linksys Gateway Lights

After numerous battles with Orange about dropped DSL and no connectivity I arrive at this point and ask for some guidance on what my BB is doing.

Currently connected to a XTE-2005 faceplate aquired today. l2 phone extensions, 1 from the back and on from the front. Each still have the old DSL filters on (belt and braces).

The isue I have is 2 fold. There are 2 lights on the modem that I need to understand.
DSL Light
Internet Light

DSL Light I presume means synchronization has occured.
Internet Light...which occasionally flashes means I registered or something

The hassles I've had are...and a plain english expanation for req please

DSL light goes out followed by Internet Light..Presumably connection dropped.
DSL Light stays on but Internet light goes out for sometimes 2 mins sometimes a day
DSL Light stays on and Internet light went red for an hour.

From the modem
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 7008 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 7 db
Upstream Margin: 31 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 45
Upstream Line Attenuation: 25
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

Downstream Margin: can wander down to 2db but the face plate might have improved this.

The issue I can't get my head round is

DSL Light stays on but Internet light goes out for sometimes 2 mins sometimes a day
My fault or Orange?

Simple answers please...juts getting used to terms.

Orange LLU, presumably.

The "internet" light will indicate an active PPP session, this could be dropped by a timeout for example due to no traffic. If it goes red this may be an authentication failure on trying to reconnect - lack of available session, RADIUS server asleep, loss of connectivity somewhere else in the system.

Thing is when nobody is using their computer in the house both lights (DSL and Internet)remain steady...when the DSL light shows connected that is.

Don't get the NO TRAFFIC bit though...sorry

When the DSL Light is on and the Internet light is off I can't create any traffic because no web pages can be displayed. It's as if my authentication either gets dropped or the something beyond the exchange goes missng...guessing really but it's annoying.

Confused as to who is at fault here?

If you don't send or receive any data - ie no traffic on the line - the far end or indeed your router may decide to drop the connection. The other end may periodically force a reconnection if you have a dynamic IP address as well.

Which ISPs do that? I have only heard of it as a measure in extremis e.g. when the customer base expanded too fast for upgrades to keep ahead.

This is what bothers me.

At first I had mutliple DSL light disconnects which now appear to have abaited. Maybe becasue I got an ADSL faceplate, maybe co-incidence. Now I get at peak times a nil light on the Internet light, it's not as if I'm not using it and thearby causing some innactivity time. Last night it went red for a period, a call to Orange just got me "customers experiencing problems"

It cam back late last night and I think has been on most of the day. Tonight again the INTERNET light has gone out twice since 5pm. The DSL light remaisn on and synced at about 7000.

Tell me it's FFF fing Orange. Thing is I don't know what the correct terminology to use to them to explain what's going on. I just get the what's this what's that burgular alarm twaddle.

I have a Linksys Modem/Router WAG54GS. Basically you are right that the DSL light shows you have sync with your exchange. The Internet light shows you are connected to your ISP. Steady when idle, flashing when data is being transferred.

Goes red when either the ISP end is down, or your connection settings have been corrupted. (Mine stores the ISP login and password as part of setup, and if you press the wrong buttons when you have a problem you can reset to factory settings accidentally).

In setup there is a time setting for it to retry connecting if connection lost.

On my setup disc there is a fullish manual with much more info than the quick start paper guide in the box. (That is on the disc as well so don't get confused). I expect you have the same.
