Extremely slow peak hours

During the day my broadband speed is great, and i constantly sync at 8096kbps. But from about 6 to midnight im lucky if i get over 400kbps on a speed test. speedtester.bt.com always gives me a good result but any other site gets under 400. I know peak hours are supposed to be slower but this isnt normal is it?

That is slow for a peak period but by no means unknown. What sort of speed do you get say at 0600?

The significant thing about the BT speedtester is that you connect to it without going through your ISP. If you consistently get higher speeds there compared with results through other testers the indication is that you may be suffering from contention in you ISP systems.Other things can cause this, though, such as contention for the tester itself (if a lot of people run tests at the same time, it is likely to work more slowly).

speedtester.bt.com is accessible via the ISP so this isn't necessarily the case.

Perhaps the OP could say what ISP this is and post a tracert to speedtester.bt.com

'cmd' in Run box of start, then 'tracert speedtester.bt.com' at the black screen prompt.
