How to get Max speed.

[link to this post]

Hi,
I have been with freedom2surf for many years now on their 512K package.
However, i have switched over to their 8mb package (which is cheaper!) and looking forward to get faster speeds.

I am told i can receive the 5mb-8mb speeds.

on the BT website, it states the changeover works.. "The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set."

Now, im wondering what i can do to ensure that over those 10 days I have the fastest speed possible, so its locked into the highest speed at the end of the 10 days. One thing i am worried about is that i have the oldest modem out there - the usb alcatel speed touch green frog thingy.

so.. just wondering if anyone can help me with these questions..

1. Should i perhaps change modem to something that is better able to handle 8mb? (the modem states it handles 8mb, but its ancient, so something else may give me better speeds).

2. After BT set the line speed, is that it? Im worried that if i use this crappy modem and they lock me to a lower speed i will be stuck at that low speed forever!!

Many thanks for any help...

the speed continues to adapt forever, nothing is fixed after 10 days. To get the best speed you need your router / modem to connect to the incoming signal and then have a filter keeping the broadband signal out of the rest of the extension wiring.

You would do better to use an ethernet connection to you pc and if your present modem will not allow this. As you said its getting old? to purchase a new router and have a fresh start
