Sig Noise increase?

My line has had a relatively stable connection at 6db since getting broadband a few years ago, the only problems I've had in the last year is decreasing S/N at night, dropping to 0 at times but always rising to 6 again by the following morning.

Of course my modem/router was disconecting and re-syncing at a lower rate so I changed firstly to a Thompson 585 which was a big improvement and then to a 2Wire 2700 (BT Business Hub) this is even better and apart from the odd drop (about every 7 to 10 days) it's been fine syncing at a steady 7616.

Came home Saturday evening and checked my Routerstats to find I had dropped to a much lower sync than normal, checking the graphs showed a 3db rise in S/N about 3:30pm when it's usually very stable, since then it's remained at 9 or 10db and I can only manage to sync at 6880. The level still drops during the evening/night and so far has returned to 9db each morning so far.

Any reason that the S/N would just rise by 3db?, the graph shows no loss of connection just the rise and re-sync at a lower rate.

I guess your line has reported lots of errors and 'upset' things at BT's end!

After being affected last summer due to a storm and having my target SNR raised to 15 I often worry about storms and bursts of noise causing high errors.

As I write this, it's pretty stormy here in Kent - and I can see my line has collected many many more errors than on a normal day.

As your line looks to be pretty healthy you'll hopefully have your target SNR reduced in a couple of weeks.

BT's system seems daft (and unfair) to me - one bad storm and you might find youself on a go slow...

ADSL shares the same frequencies as MW radio, and the MW signals are always stronger at night, because they are reflected by a layer in the ionosphere which gets depleted by the Sun's rays. The ring wire on telephone extensions makes an excellent arial for MW radio signals, so the first thing to do would be to disconnect the ring wire (wire 3) on all phone sockets. This will help stop your wiring from picking up these signals, which your router sees as noise.

The best solution would be to fit a filtered faceplate to the master socket, connect your router to that, and run ethernet to your PC('s), and then run all your extensions from the filtered output on the socket. Try the first solution, and see how that goes first. If you choose the latter option, there is no need to disconnect the ring wires.

Moving the router to the master socket is more of a problem, the socket is in the hall with the nearest mains point is about 4m away on the wrong wall and with 3 doors to cross to get to it. All 3 of our PCs are upstairs, I have an extension socket hard wired into the master socket with about 15m of cable between the two, this wiring has been in place about 18 years, router is connected to the socked via the usual micro filter (changed as well) and the PCs all connect with good quality Cat5E cable, longest is about 10m.
