BT Test socket

Hi there

I've just recently activated my phone line in my new house, and have got broadband through AOL.

If my router is plugged into either of the two phone sockets in my house ( via a filter) my internet connection is intermittent.
If however, I plug the router into the BT test socket located behind the face plate of the master socket, the connection is fine. Unfortunately this seems to disable the other phone socket into which I want to plug my phone.

Why would the test socket be different from the actual sockets? Should the test socket disable all other sockets when in use?

That is the point of the test socket, i.e. removes the effects that extension wiring can have.

Ah ok thanks, so that confirms the problem is at my end.

I tried takin out the ring wire. It seems to have sorted out the disconnections, but it's not as quick as when connected directly to the test socket.

Would using one of those faceplates with a dedicated adsl port have the same effect as connecting directly to the test socket?
