Training Stats

[link to this post]

Just migrated from Sky LLU to Newnet ADSL Max package

Used to get 7mb sync speeds but on Newnet getting following when running speedtest from BT.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/4184/btspeed.jpg

Was only migrated 24hrs ago, here are simple stats from router

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4160 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 16.0 db

Line attenuation (down) up from usual 40db previously which would explain sync drop

When testing completed will i see closer to the max connection rate BT has calculated? or will the attenuation stop me from reaching that? Im 1.8km from exchange as crow flies.

You are getting pretty much the sync speeds you would expect (on ADSL rather than Sky ADSL2+) for an attenuation of 58dB.

I have no idea why your attenuation has risen from 40dB to 58dB but that would certainly explain the change in sync speed. Unfortunately attenuation is pretty constant. Has your line changed in any physical way?

Hasnt changed as far as im aware?

Depends whats involved from moving from LLU back to ADSL max i suppose but no changes on phoneline thats all ok

BT speedtest shows my line capable of the normal speeds i was getting - just thought it was training but as you say the line attenuation shouldnt change should it?

Why also would it show 7150kbps if the attenuation was as high as stated on router?

Router has stayed same by the way - DG834GT, updated with DG Team firmware V1.02.16 - DGTeam Rev. 0848

The LLU to BT kit change is internal to the exchange (move a pair of wires). That shouldn't have introduced any extra attenuation. I'm baffled as to why attenuation has increased from 40 to 58dB.

Doesnt the max attainable speed on the BT test though show what line is capable of?

Therefore i could raise it as a problem? or would they say as it falls in the acceptable range they wouldnt do anything?

Its got worse today as well frown

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3136 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.1 db 16.0 db

I'm afraid the max attainable figure seems to be the same for everyone. It is just showing the maximum BT IP profile of 7150kbps and bears no relationship to what your line can achieve.

Damn frown

Not sure if its me looking for it but phoneline seems to have some background static (like a buzzing) noise now. Same when phone plugged directly into master socket and not using any filters.

Rang Sky who do my line rental - they did tests and said they could find nothing wrong with line.

They said they can call engineer out but could be charged £170 if its internal wiring.

They also said if the master socket is faulty then thats classed as internal wiring? i said i thought you couldnt replace or touch the BT mastersocket as BT equipment but guy said no its in your house so yours?

Firstly what are the chances the BT engineer will fob me off and charge me the £170?

Secondly can i replace my master socket? i always thought it was BT equipment and you cant touch it?

If this was a more normal I'm getting low speeds post we would have approached it differently. I suppose we may as well do that now.

Could you let us know your router/modem stats when plugged in to the test socket within the (newish) master BT socket?

See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html

If you don't have a test socket could you get the stats when all your other telecoms kit is unplugged?

As an aside you could also try the BT quiet line test (17070 option 2) with your router/modem disconnected.

Following is from the test socket with no other extensions in or working

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3776 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 9.8 db 15.0 db

Have run the 17070 quiet line test before ringing sky when connected directly to test socket and the noise is still there. Its not a clicking, loud static kind of noise just a constant light buzzing in background that im sure was not there before.
