Constant DSL disconnect

[link to this post]

Hi all,

My problem is as follows. I recently moved to Saudi Arabia and got myself a DSL connection. I've had this problem since the start, I constantly get disconnected. What I have noticed is that it occurs a lot more on peak hours - I checked early morning today and uptime was about 8 hours, weekend evenings i get disconnected every few minutes. Being a gamer, you can probably imagine how annoying this is.

My stats are below, what I need to know is this: Is the problem from the building's wiring or is the problem from my ISP? The numbers here aren't at all encouraging (pathetic SNR and attenuation) but at least if I know the source of the problem I can set about fixing it.

Many thanks,

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 384 / 1.229
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 0,00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 0,0 / 18,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 40,0 / 59,5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6,5 / 6,5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 29 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 27 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 115 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1.833
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 3
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 262.942 / 3

Who is your ISP

Also with your stats being a pretty long line if you have LLU on your exchange I'd recommend going for that it works wonders. Your downstream attenuation is long about the same as mine at 59db (I am currently on 2459/627) but your snr looks fine at the standard 6db. The router you use also does make a difference, the dg834gt works well and I am currently connected to that, it does hold sync on the lowest of snr's also the hgv2700 bt business hub is good.

Type your postcode/phone number in here and tell us your exchange.

As Xilonet said, I am in Saudi....

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by LLU, but the way it works here is you can get broadband from the state's ISP/telecom provider, or you can request broadband from them, pay a small fee, and then get your username/password from another ISP. Is this what you mean?

What I'd like to know (if you can tell just by looking at those numbers) is:
1 - Is the problem from the building's wiring (i.e. will the problem be sorted by new, external wiring) and
2 - Will a bandwidth decrease help with the problem?

Many thanks,

1) It could be. Do they have master sockets over there that you can isolate your internal wiring from the telephony providers network? (i.e remove everything apart from the router)?

2) Yes, that may. You'll need to speak with your ISP to see if they can cap the downstream thus allowing you slightly more noise margin to deal with the noise on the longish line you have.

Forgot to add.. I'm using a Thomson TG585 v7. ISP gave me a router with their logo on it, same issues with that.

I'll try to:
1) Connect the router directly to the switchboard outside and get new readings.
2) Ask for a temporary 512K or 1MB connection and see what happens.

Things to watch:

Do not use an extension cable between the phone socket and the router. If you need to extend to get to the computer use an Ethernet cable from the router to the computer.

Is the connection from the router to the computer wired or wireless?

Have you tried changing the filters?

Is everything connected to the line filtered? Every phone etc.
