I'm with BE who had been pretty much rock solid since I joined last June.
Then I started to have some problems. For the last month or so though, my line goes down several times an hour, and it is SLOOOOW.
I have tried:
Checking for line noise
Changed my ADSL filter
Changing my RJ45 cable
Changing my ethernet cable
Different PCs
And everything else I can think of
I do not have a separate test socket on my 'master' socket - there is no NT5 faceplate.
My house is only ten years old.
I gather that I *am* a reasonably long way from the exchange

According to Google Maps I am about 2.3 miles or 3.7 km from the exchange 'as the crow flies'.
According to SamKnows "You are approximately 3.11km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!"
I was getting solid connections at between 3-3.5 which was good enough for me.
This looks interesting, though:

BT are also offering a free new line at the moment - the main reason for posting is to ask if this is worth pursuing to see if I can get a shorter line?
