Help Please i was asked by virgin adsl to take off the faceplate and put my adsl and filter into the test socket , when i unscrewed the socket and carefully removed the faceplate....all the wires came off
the test socket is still working , therefore so is my internet and phone...
i'm not sure if i should complain about this to them ! as i might be charged.....and they might accuse me of been too rough with the product and charge me for a callout which i believe is 150 quid , or is this a legitiment / common problem , you can see the socket has been fitted for many years.....
i'm happy to try and put the wires back on , there only appears to be 4 wires.
will i need a special tool to put the wires back into the slots as the look as if they would....if so what is the name of this tool and i'll grab one from ebay..
the colours are :-
orange
yellow
blue white
green and white....
the socket is numbered :-
looks identical in design to this :-

If the wires just fell out then you could have a faulty lower faceplate, ie someone has used a screwdriver to insert the wires rather than the proper tool which is called a Krone tool, can be bought at DIY sheds, Screwfix etc.
The quickest way to find out what wires go where is to take the faceplates off the extension socket(s) and see what colours goto what terminals.
The colour code you have listed is not a standard one for telephone cable so it could also mean that someone has used incorrect cable to the extensions.

hi , thank you for your reply.....unfortunately there is no extenstion .
i have checked the wiring , two of them have a small extenstion to the wires.
so the original coding is now :-
Black (could be another dark colour but looks black could be blue)
Orange
yellow
Green.
any advice would be welcomed.
how are bt when you ring up to complain , when you was asked to remove the test socket the wires came off ?
or would i just simply have to pay for there call out....i know what bt can be like.

If no extension, then where does the other end of these wires that fell off go to.
If not feeding an extension then no need for them. The NTE5 faceplate can slide back up, and the socket on the front should be active.

aaah , very interesting comment , thank you MrSaffron......
basically we live in a converted Hall , theres around 15 flats here , so perhaps that is where they goto.....not sure , i've looked in the two bedrooms and cannot see another socket.
so as per your reply , i simply just push it back on and hey presto it will work , no need to rewire etc ?
the phone and adsl are working fine in the test socket...
i assumed they had dropped off , they where fairly short , enough for the socket to be around 2 inch away when released from the main block on the wall.
Perhaps i have not pulled off any wires at all !
so what you are saying , is , just put the socket back on , therefore making it work just as before...
i thought i was going to be B.T Billed .....phew , i hope . based on my ponderings on your reply....it will come as a relief thats for sure.....i one of them almighty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what have i done moments....ive kinda been having one of those weeks in general...

Putting socket back, just making sure you don't crush any of these other wires, means front socket should just work.
If unable to follow route of the mystery wire, then a suggestion may be that this was from a time prior to the conversion of the flats, and having this wire connected was probably affecting your ADSL stability.

will do i'll put a bit of tape on the end of each of the wires also as they are bare at the mo , i would agree with you , the wires will be from a by gone age before ADSL....ah the good old dial up days...
thank you very much , i'm feeling cool and calm again.....i'm relieved...i dont like to cause damage and not to be able to fix it .
great forum

Bare? IDC connectors are designed to slice into the insulation, so should be no bare wire, other than the diameter of each core at the end of the wire.

If you pull the wire out of an IDC connector it will often strip it especially if it has been removed and replaced before, the hook on a Krone tool is the right way to do it
