10 day waiting period

[link to this post]

What is the reason for a 10 day waiting period before anything can be done about a newly activated but practically unusable ADSL broadband connection?

Also I'm leaving the router plugged in and synced but disconnected from ISP. This is so I can use the internet with my 3G dongle and still use the router as a wireless hub. Will this make a difference to any BT gadgetry?

Thanks.

10 day training period. None apart from deciding on the Fault Threshold Rate (FTR) which seems to have been deprecated by BT anyhow. http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adslmax_explained.php

I suspect the real reason was to prevent silly complaints during the early days of ADSL. If it's your own fault you probably realise within 10 days.

Plugged in but not authenticated? i.e. you withhold password or user id? BT shouldn't know so I can't see how it would affect them.

Thanks. Thought so.

Yeah. If I authenticate the PC wants to use the ADSL as an internet connection rather than the dongle.

I don't think it's my fault. I've followed all the usual advice. Although I would appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Take a look at this TBB ping graph and speed test result. This is with the router plugged directly into the BT test socket. As you can see from the ping graph there is persistent 5% to 10% packet loss. I think this is responsible for all the problems. The upload speed test seems fine, I don't know what the significance of that is?

These are current router stats:

Upstream 848 kbps
Downstream 3069 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 6.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 7.4 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 29.5 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 52.0 db

I think I'll leave the ping test going overnight then add it to the ticket raised with my ISP.

The 10 day thing is for that thing called DLM to run, (Imho should not be used) as no need they should work for their money and set the connection up manually instead, but then they would have to train people or employ people who are qualified to do this, but dlm is a cheap option that in a lot of cases doesn't give best performance that a customers line is capable of, can you post your stats from your router?
looks like you are getting around 5-10 packet loss that will cause a degradation of throughput, even cause it to stop, could be noise/interference on the line it's self or from something en route from exchange to your home

With those figures it seems like you are on ADSL2+. On standard ADSL Max you'd expect 5MBps+. Ping problems seem to be down to choosing a BT ISP.

The DLM is never turned off, it runs from day 1 to day 36000

I don't want to speak too soon but I think you've cracked it! The router setting was on 'auto' and you were right it was connecting with ADSL2+. I switched it to ADSL G.DMT, the speed did not change but the internet is working now!

You can see the packet loss has stopped on the ping graph and speed test results are reasonable.

I wish I could buy you a virtual pint. Thanks! smile

choosing a BT ISP.
Not really a choice as C&W and Sky are full on my exchange. frown Well there was also AOL, but...
