ADSL from phone line through CAT5 cable/network?

[link to this post]

Is it possible to route an ADSL line via a CAT5 cabled network?

I have a ADSL activated tel line but the phone socket is to far away from my modem.
Extending the phone line is unfortunately not an option. I have CAT5 cabled network

running through the building with a patchbay that connects the various floor ports in each

of the rooms.

Is it possible to route the ADSL via the network? I have seen various RJ11-RJ45 adaptors

and was curious if I could use one to connect from the phone socket to one of the RJ45

floor ports, through the patchbay and the network and out to a RJ45 port to another

RJ45-RJ11 adaptor in the room that has the ADSL modem/router.

Would really appreciate some advice on this.

Many thanks,

Nell

Do you just want to run the ADSL over the cat5 or the PSTN as well?
If just the ADSL then a RJ11 cable from the filter will plug into an RJ45 socket without the need for an adaptor

Just over the cat5. So I can just plug it into the RJ45 network and patch to what port I want via the patchbay?

Unless the exchange provide ethernet packets which, I suspect, is highly unlikely, this is not going to work.

Why not just get an ADSL modem/router, put it near the telephone socket and run Cat5 to the nearest existing internal network router/hub/switch?

You can plug the RJ11 cable from the ADSL socket on the filter straight into a RJ45 port on the network cabling. Then at the other end another RJ11 cable into the router.

unfortunately, the router has to be in this specific room... squidgy48 seems to think its poss. Forgive my ignorance but would the signal simply just pass via the copper along the CAT5?

Will work as Squidgy describes just fine.
RJ11 from filter to RJ45 faceplate--patch panel(standard patch lead will do)--RJ45 faceplate to RJ11 to router.

Plenty of people have similar setups, myself included. One thing I would recommend is to use a faceplate filter at the main BT socket if possible rather than the plugin type of filter.

In reply to:

Why? There could be other ways of looking at the problem which invalidate this requirement or which permit other ways of meeting it.

Some people don't have a power source close to the master socket.
