Help needed: Speed fluctuations on MAX account

Sorry if this is considered cross-posting. i posted a similar message in the Pipex forum as that's my ISP but then though it might be better off in here. Anyway, here's the problem:

I upgraded to Pipex MAX from a 2MB Pipex Go account and since the regrade I've had severe speed problems. The best way I can describe it is as if the speed fluctuates from about 700kbps to 0kbps in a 20 second cycle. When downloading steadily off usenet (using a non pipex news account) The speed climbs to the max speed (anything from 300 to 700kbps), holds for 10 seconds or so then dips to 0kbps and stays at zero activity for about the same. Then repeats. The activity chart on a Dumeter shows alernating spikes and flatlines.

Now, I reinstalled my PC to make sure it wasn't software related (extreme I know but it needed doing anyway) and the problem persists. When I brows the web it seems okay but if I try to download a file through my browser it sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't, when it does the download will often freeze mid stream and fail to resume (presumably as it hits a 'down' spike). A friend of mine said it might be due to interleaving but reading on here that doesn't seem to cause problems this severe. it almost feels like the line hits max speed, freaks out and resets.

Any ideas?

Sorry, you'll have to bear with me as I'm not all that clued up on DSL stuff. What data should I post and how should I get it?

line attenuation, sync speeds, error counters per defined online time, speedtest results from new BT speedtester etc. www.kitz.co.uk ADSL pages to help find line stats.

Speed tests I did here on adslguide came back at 5.7mbps the last 3 times I tried it but the fluctuations persist and downloading anything is all but impossible.

I've no idea how to find out the information you mention but I'll look into it and try to post that when i get home.

Try disabling any software anti-virus, I installed kasperky AV the other week and it crippled my download speeds from usenet.

Try testing at the NTE with all extensions disconnected, as described.

James you have just become my personal hero. Uninstalled Kaspersky (which I had forgotten I installed around the same time as the regrade) and so far everything's working fine.
