ADSL will only Sync when phone off hook?

[link to this post]

I've tried setting up broadband for a mate and its only synchronising for a minute or two when the phone is lifted of the base and the dial tone is audible. As soon as you replace the handset the ADSL loses sync and enters its continual loop of trying to synchronise!

That is either:

a. Faulty Filter
b. Lousy phone (interference) but unlikely to be related to loss of sync
c. High Resistance joint
d. Faulty Wiring

If you've tested at the master socket with different filters, then it is a job for BT which must be logged via Tiscali.

Good luck.

If you hear noise (continual hiss sort of noise) on the line it smacks of a dodgy filter - confirmed if it disappears shortly after you unplug the router/modem.

The business about only working with the phone off the hook sounds like a classic dodgy joint problem - the extra current flowing when the phone is used apparently has some sort of "healing" effect.

The second one makes it sound like a BT job (through ISP unless you also get voice problems). Best to try a different filter first though.

Answers based on stuff picked up here - not personal experience.

the filter might be faulty or not, but the fact that it allows audible sounds to pass into the telephone is hardly an indication, that is what it is supposed to do. It is the high frequencies used by ADSL that it should block and you cannot hear them, so listening to it will not tell you if there is a fault. There is an exception, some, probably faulty, equipment on the telephone side of the filter could generate subharmonics if it received the ADSL signal.

A dodgy joint could generate audible sound which would pass through the filter. It could also be creating higher frequency noise which would affect the ADSL.
