slow slow quick quick slow

[link to this post]

Hello,

I've got a max adsl line which normally syncs between 3-4mbps and I see actual download speeds of between 2-3mbps. For the last 2-3 weeks my dl speed has dropped to about 200 kbps, so my ul speed is greater than my dl speed! I've rang my isp (BT Broadband) on both occasions. Each time, they've tested the line and said there's a line fault and they'll log it with BT. After about a week, my connection goes back to 2-3mbps for a few days, and then returns back to 200kbps. This has happened twice now. Not a lot of information to go on, I know but has anyone experienced a similar situation or know what the issue is? I don't want a part-time fast connection, and don't want to be ringing BT Broadband every week.

Stats

Statistics Downstream (Upstream)
Line Rate 2848 (448)
Noise Margin 9.0 dB (16.0 dB)
Line Attenuation 47.0 dB (30.0 dB)
Output Power 11.9 dBm (18.7 dBm)

That's a low sync speed for such a reasonably short attenuation. The first thing to do would be rule your internal wiring and set up, test at the NTE test jack, with all else disconnected/unplugged, as described here. Once you have done this, post back with the results.

Couldn't be bothered moving my router, but I connected to the master socket using my old speedtouch 330, and got a sync of 2600 kbps downstream. It's no biggie as I live a fair few miles from the exchange anyway. I was more interested if other people had experienced / had an opinion on why I'm getting an ok connection of 2-3 mbps for a couple of days, and then its back to a download speed that only just beats ISDN.
