No Phone line and Max gone bad

[link to this post]

(Long post)
Hi I wonder if anyone can give me a clue to whats going on with my line.
To start with I am on maxdsl (since the introduction)with a downstream atten of 38 and a snr 15 I was able to connect originally at 8mb but have dropped to around 5mb.
Recently over the last couple of days my connection would suddenly stop, checking in DMT my snr was reducing from 15 then 12 to eventually 4 within seconds(happening now as I write this!).A resync of the router and everything was fine.
Today however the phone has stopped working with no dial tone at all.The router is on a BT hard wired extension but I have only one set of cable going to the mastersocket and the extension must be connected outside within a grey plastic sleeve that have all the phone wires in coming from the ground.
Now my atten has dropped to 55 and my snr to 12,When I connect the router into the mastersocket behind the face plate the speed is 7mb and atten to 37 also the phone works.
Coincedentaly I recently had bt out to change over another line from isdn to normal.do you think that the engineer could have disturbed some of the connections..? and the weather has affected them.I have an engineer calling on tuesday.
Thanks
Mick

No, it is reasonably short

That's fairly conclusive, the problem is in your wiring. BTW, your attenuation increased to 55

You give no information about the proximity of the wiring for the 2 lines, so there is no basis to judge

Report it as a dead phone line - it'll be quicker than reporting an ADSL fault. When one fault is cleared, so should be the other.

Hi thanx for the response, all the lines come up from the ground to the one place(outside my house).Thats where the engineer changed over my homehighway.I would have imagined that they had to serperate (not unattach)all the cables just to see what was going where as when I took the cover off from outside they appears to be quite a few wires to say the least.
Could the extension be joined outside to the main line as there is only one cable going to my master socket and the extension comes from the outside plastic housing.Would BT generally do this and not run a extension cable from the master socket..?

If the post is correct, and all is well at the test jack, then what is calling out BT going to get him, other than a bill ?

Slight update.
I have managed to look at the connections outside my house where the BT wiring comes up from the ground. It appears as if the problem could be that the extension has been trapped between the plastic face plate (outside)and the brickwork.Short of removing the outer sleeve I can not be certain. Why would BT have run my extension from here and not put a new cable to the back of the box..? probably cheapskates I think
Could I change over the two extension wires with two that are free, question is would they have been joined up outside..?
Any thoughts.
Also does anyone know where I can get ext Cat5 from as most appear to want to sell 100m

Thanx
Mick

My reply was prompted by the OP's statement "Today however the phone has stopped working with no dial tone at all." which seemed to indicate a BT cable fault. Also, it has been my experience with BT that most engineers do not go by the book and charge for everything in sight.

Sorted
The problem was a trapped wire which the BT engineer did when he changed my isdn over,He obviously didnt realise that he had trapped the extension cable against the brickwork and face plate.
I have exchanged the green bell wire with the white/orange and done away with this,
my atten is back at 38 and my sync speed is 6.3mb.
I will order some ext cat5 (if someone can tell me where I can get it from)and rewire the extension with this as I was getting 8mb plugged directly into the master face plate.
I need to cancel the engineer now.
A side note I am getting a two tone dial tone,BT have yet to turn call divert off.?any ideas
Thanx again
Mick
