i have only had my newnet 8 meg connection for 1 week so the stable line rate hasn't been set yet, what speed can i expect to get. my line attenuation is 4 and my signal to noise ratio is 11 on my phone line.

In reply to:

line attenuation is 4

Units would help, but if you're saying 4dB downstream attenuation then you will almost certainly have had 8Mbps from the first time you connected.

it is 4db, i dont think im getting the 8 meg. speed test from this site is saying 4.4meg to 6.7. Plus im not getting that great a ping when playing online games. Have invested in a new buffalo router which has made the connection more stable.

It could be congestion that is preventing you from getting the full speed.

my exchange vp is often on red so i imagine it is oversubcribed and congested. There are unfortunately no plans to upgrade it.

Line training isn't going to affect congestion. If BT can't give you a full speed service on 4dB attn, then you could try a good LLU provider if they support your exchange?

speed test from this site is saying 4.4meg to 6.7

6.7Mbps is pretty much the maximum speed you'll get from a "8meg" ADSLmax connection.
The maximum sync is 8128kbps, which will give a maximum IP profile of 7150kbps, which gives approximately 6.7-6.8Mbps as the maximum usable data throughput.
So, as someone has already posted, any speeds below 6.7Mbps will be due to ISP or exchange congestion (or both).
Which a line attenuation as low as 4db, go for an ADSL2+ LLU product (BE, Bulldog or Sky/Easynet) at the first opportunity - that way, you'll probably get much more than 8Mbps.

Giving UKFSN/Entanet a try
DL Sync 4288kbps
UL Sync 448
