Fujitsu 310 Modem adsl

[link to this post]

Hello
A week ago out of the blue my upstream/downstream icon suddenly changed from showing max downstream of 2Meg to 6Meg.
Great you might think but no from the same time I now struggle to get connected and very regularly I get dropped.

Doing speed checks when I am connected comes out as my max of 448 up 2203 down.
My ISP ECLIPSE have said nothing has changed but clearly the line has, but that I should check all my wiring.
Well I have used a new 4.5 metre highspeed cable to go direct to the BT socket but still get the same results.

ECLIPSE are now saying my original Fujitsu 310 modem from them may be not capable of sustaining the 6Meg available???

If so this has only happened from the 2-6Meg change am I really expected to pay out for a new modem when until the changes all was fine.
Any suggestions anyone.

I'm pretty clueless on the technical side.

thanks

Looks like you've been moved to an ADSLmax product (or, as your ISP is Eclipse, maybe the LLU version of it).
What you're experiencing is common with the higher speed connection with this new service.
Eclipse are probably correct in saying your USB modem may struggle on the faster service (many have trouble).
If money's a bit tight, you could always get a 'b' grade router from www.dsldepot.co.uk although even on 'b' grade devices, try not to spend less than

Thanks for the reply Adebov.
I'll give those checks a go first then if they are all ok I'll look to upgrade maybe.

I just feel I'm being pushed into some thing I don't need being an "old silver surfer" particually when I asked if the offer of a free router would apply but that's a no no as it's only for new intake.

Maybe I will have to migrate too.

Regards

PS. So I can not ask them to put me back as I was before the speed was changed..

So I can not ask them to put me back as I was before the speed was changed.

Probably not. Eclipse are one of the ISPs that have made the old 2Mbps (and below) products unavailable to new customers, and also unavailable to existing customers switching between products.
Other ISPs still do the old fixed speed products, but many are ADSLmax based so still connect at the variable speed (which is what's giving you the problem).
Some (UKFSN being one of them) will provide a proper "vanilla" fixed speed product, if specifically asked.
Unfortunately, BT have tightened up their acceptance criteria, so those previously on 1 or 2Mbps fixed speed products cannot now have the product they were on before changing to ADSLmax (I'm one of the unlucky ones).
What does the BT number checker say is available on your line? (Enter your 'phone number in the "can I get broadband" box).

Yeah the checker says i'm ok up to 2Meg and that it should support up to 6.5 - 8Meg.

Tonight once I got on I stayed connected for 4 hours which is way the best I've done recently.
Am I to assume that the service will get better once they have tested what IS a new service to me if that's what's going on now. I suppose they could just be seeing what the line will sustain.
One other thing checking on the wiring from the site you posted I have a 4.5Metre Highspeed cable from the filter at the incoming BT jack running direct to my modem and then into my PC.
I'm not clear if I should need to put a filter at the end of that lead before it connects to the modem. I do have a spare filter so I'll give it a try.

Thanks for you help.

The filter is only there to block the high frequency ADSL signal from affecting the telephone circuit and to prevent any high frequency noise from the telephone side feeding back and affecting the ADSL side. If, like I do, you don't have any telephones connected you can normally plug the modem directly into the telephone socket without any problem, especially if you don't have any extension circuitry and a ring wire. Of course if you do have extensions you might possibly get high frequency noise from any extension circuit and the ring or bell wire, especially the ring or bell wire as this is an unbalanced circuit and can act as an aerial picking up high frequency noise and can feed it back to the ADSL side via the capacitor in the master socket. The filter on a rope type with a socket out for the modem and a socket out for the telephone only has filter circuitry on the telephone out side and the modem out side is usually a straight pass through circuit.
