SpeedTouch 585 and DMT Tool

[link to this post]

I've ordered a SpeedTouch 585 to replace my Netgear DG834G (v1) as my noise margin is so low (often a minus figure) that I am suffering an unresponsive connection at times and disconnects. I chose the SpeedTouch 585 because it seems to be quite a reputable router and it is compatible with the DMT Tool.

Is there a guide or a webpage anywhere that'll help me get started with the DMT Tool? Being quite a technical program, I just don't know what to do or where to start.

Thanks.

If you go back through the posts in this forum, someone wrote quite a good guide to DMT a while ago.

Hmm, can't seem to find anything. I don't find the search that great on this site...

I'll keep looking. Thanks.

After a lot of searching, I think I've found it.

I'm glad . You're right - the search facility on this site can leave a little to be desired in some circumstances.

I overcame that by going through every page and using my brower to search for "dmt".

Well, I've got to say I'm extremely pleased with the SpeedTouch so far, and it seems as though I may not even need to touch the DMT Tool.

My old Netgear sync'd far too high giving me a poor noise margin (often minus). The SpeedTouch syncs much lower giving a solid 6.5dB margin.

One thing I've noticed (which I didn't on the Netgear because it didn't display such information) is that in half an hour I've had nearly 3000 downstream FEC errors, but only about 10 CRC and 10 HEC errors. Is this anything to be concerned about and, if so, how can I reduce it?

Well, I get about 2500 FEC's an hour and about 10 to 15 CRC's, so your stats are broadly the same as mine, but I can't say whether they're good or bad - I've never seen definitive figures for this.

I have been looking for a guide on how to use DMT too.

I can't seem to get the thing working even though my router (SpeedTouch 536) is listed as compatible.

I just keep getting "can not identify modemtype" appearing in the status bar.
