When will my BRA line profile change?

[link to this post]

Hi everyone,

My ADSL max line was activated on Friday (09/02) and i live about 3kms away from the exchange (as the crow flies). Now i know its early days yet and i have to wait for at least 10 days for my line to settle before my speed is set. But ever since i've been connected, all speedtests show my speed as 0.5 Mbps though my modem (Linksys AM200) always syncs at around the 3.5 Mbps mark. So i used the BT speedtester to see what the BRAS line profile is set as, and it says 500 Kbps. Now my question is will BT automatically change the BRAS line profile after 10 days or should i call up my ISP asap so that it can be changed DURING the first 10 days? Assuming my modem syncs constantly at 3.5Mbps, should i expect my BRAS line profile to be set at 2.5Mbps or 3Mbps? My line stats are shown below:
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: Auto
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 3552 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 5 db
Upstream Margin: 16 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 56
Upstream Line Attenuation: 63
Downstream Transmit Power: 18
Upstream Transmit Power: 12
LOS Errors: 0

Thanks in advance!

Your current sync speed will get you a profile of 3000kbps.

During the 'training period' I don't think there's much an ISP can do, I believe I've read they can't even raise a fault with BT. As the profile generally takes 3 days to move upwards, it's a bit early to worry anyway. If it doesn't shift by Tuesday, you could check what's happening with your ISP, but expect to be told to wait the 10 days.

Are you sure you are not experiencing any low speed sync events, eg overnight?

Whatever you do, don't keep re-booting the router. If Bt's software detects 10 or more re-syncs in an hour, it sees it as a sign of instability, and will depress your profile.

Your upstream margin and attenuation seem low and high respectively. There may be improvements you could make to your internal wiring which could help your cause.

It's worth noting that your profile is not fixed in stone after 10 days, your line is monitored continuously and your profile will be adjusted to reflect any changes. The only thing set in stone which matters is the fault threshold, the point at which an ISP can raise a fault with BT.

from 2848Kbps 2.5Mbps
from 3424Kbps 3Mbps

you should be on 3M it should go there within 75 minutes. Has the modem/router been off for about an hour or more (or overnight) occasionally that helps.

Hi Guys

Thanks for replying. Well my modem is left switched on 24 hrs a day and is directly connected to the BT master socket (no extension cables) as i read somewhere that during the max initialization period its best to leave the modem on continiously. The lowest speed at which my modem has synched at so far is 3.2 Mbps but most of the time its around the 3.5 mark. As for internal wiring at the moment i'm using a bog standard filter but i have ordered an XTE-2005 ADSL faceplate (from www.adslnation.com) which i will fit onto the BT master socket, so hopefully that should improve my line stats.

Guess i will just have to wait for the 10 day period before i raise any faults with my ISP.

Thanks for all your help anyway

leave it off for about 2 hours in case the speed change got overlooked.
