Line Stats checking ... opinions

[link to this post]

Hello,

I've been delving around these very interesting boards and trying a few things in preparation of changing my package. I'm currently with Zen and have a 512 connection. I'm thinking of upgrading to Zen 8000 Lite.
I have a Speedtouch 330.
I'm 1.1km from the exchange

I ran the diagnostics from a link I found somewhere on here.

I'm hoping to get some speed benefit from the upgrade so wondered are these good, bad or indifferent stats?

DSLUptime= 10491
ErrorredSeconds= 2
LossOfFraming= 2
LossOfLink= 0
LossOfSignal= 2
PhysicalLinkStatus= Up
ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 32
ReceiveMargin_dB= 31
RxOutputPower_dBm= 0
SendAttenuation_dB= 17
SendMargin_dB= 31
TotalBytesReceived= 35268956
TotalBytesSent= 7735403
TotalPacketsReceived= 32558
TotalPacketsSent= 32558

Hope I've inserted the right bits.

cheers

They're very good. You should achieve between 6 and 8 M with those stats, although nothing in the ADSL world is 100% guaranteed.

They are fairly good and you may get near to full rate, but in order to get the most out of ADSL Max you will be best advised to change from a USB modem to a router. The USB1 interface just isnt fast enough to handle full rate ADSL

Thanks zebedeee for the prompt reply and on my other newbie questions!
Meant to say I've actually ordered my migrate so will report back when it's all sorted out.

rogan, yes I realise that, I'm looking around at the moment for the wireless router option which I know dick about so am doing my homework first. Ta.

Spent an hour or two looking around the boards, lots of interesting stuff on here and helpful people. Thanks. Hope I don't turn into a stats head though LOL

cheers again

We all do for a while, but the long term prognosis is generally good.

Hi

Have migrated to Zen 8000 today, very smooth migration. My speeds vary according to the speed tester used between 2560 kbps and 2790 kbps down with roughly 470 kbps up. I understand you have to wait for 10 days for it to settle down. No problems with that as I'm chuffed with even these speeds compared to my usual 512.

But I was wondering if it is necessary/useful to change the modem settings for my Speedtouch 330 as I found on a link somewhere on here for higher speed potential. Or is this too premature? Here is the link
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=bulldog&Number=1939137&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

Not sure if it is worth posting the modem info from Dr SpeedTesst but here is what they currently are ...

DSLUptime= 2123
ErrorredSeconds= 4
LossOfFraming= 4
LossOfLink= 0
LossOfSignal= 4
PhysicalLinkStatus= Up
ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 32
ReceiveMargin_dB= 8
RxOutputPower_dBm= 0
SendAttenuation_dB= 17
SendMargin_dB= 21
TotalBytesReceived= 43728763
TotalBytesSent= 8524679
TotalPacketsReceived= 30780
TotalPacketsSent= 30780
TxOutputPower_dBm= 0
Uptime= 2123
ChannelMode= Fast
Layer1DownstreamMaxBitRate= 7680000
Layer1UpstreamMaxBitRate= 448000
WANAccessType= DSL

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers.

If I were you, I'd change the modem to an ethernet one. Your line is capable of better than that. USB modems don't cope well at higher speeds.

zebedeee thanks, you may be right on that one.

In the meantime, anyone got an ideas about the modem updates question?

cheers

Yes, do the update. However, I have to say that if you're going to change modems, there's not a lot of point in doing it. USB modems are not good at higher speeds, period. I'm the second person in the thread to tell you this.

Thanks, I do have a reason for not getting a router just yet so maximizing my current setup as previously said for the moment.

Still in my 10 day period of course but after altering the configuration, things a bit variable but now getting 6059 kbps down and 385 kbps up on my latest test - so not too bad methinks for a 5 year old modem So worth taking the time to do the reconfiguration update.

Cheers
