Huge Upload Traffic Increase

[link to this post]

Hello. I hope this is in the correct sub-forum. Please move if need be!

Two days ago I changed my internet connection from a BT Voyager ADSL modem to a Netgear DG834G Wireless Router with a Netgear WG111 wireless adaptor. Everything seems to have gone fine apart from a couple of things.

The main concern is the seemingly massive increase in upload traffic. This can be traced back to changing to wireless. I run 'Netmeter' and the highest ever daily upload figure I have had since 2 days ago has been around 300KB.

I do use P2P (eMule) and always thought this was very low. However my daily figure yesterday after using P2P in the morning was 300MB!!!!! I have done precautionary virus scans but this found nothing. My download figures are fine and seem realistic enough.

I have WPA security enabled on both the Router and the Wireless Adaptor.

Any Ideas???

Also, although the connection has been good I have had the same problem about 3 times where the wireless signal disconnects then reconnects a few seconds later, then disconnects again. This is a pattern then. The only way I have been able to sort this is by re-applying my settings on the wireless adaptor status screen or restarting the PC. Not that bothered about this but just wondered what the problem could be.

Thanks everyone in advance!

The security is only as good as the password.

Try here https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm refresh the page a couple of times and watch the keys change. Choose a 63 digit password and try that.

Cheers for that.

My password, although not up to those standards is pretty secure. I'm not sure that is the issue really. I live in a rural area so I don't think any one would take the time to come out on the off chance of finding a unsecured network. It is secure to a decent extent anyway but I may change to one of those passwords.

I should point out that I do have a software firewall as well which gives me an added layer. I also tested my security on shieldsup, which achieved a perfect score.

The upload increase is baffling though. Well it is to me unless anyone can explain it!!!

The new upload figures seem far more realistic. The whole point of P2P technology is that you should be uploading as much as you download on average. Not sure why this wasn't the case with the old setup though. Perhaps the modem configuration wasn't allowing incoming P2P connections? Did you use a firewall on the PC with the modem?

Hi

As far as I could tell before I was showing uploads from eMule and the speeds they were uploading at. I am pretty sure my firewall was configured correctly for eMule

Perhaps the software that monitors usage is not totally reliable with an ADSL modem??

I got a bit paranoid about the upload increase after watching a report on Sky News (10 mins after i noticed this issue!!!) about File Sharing software exposing personal details stored on a computer.

I am as certain as i can be that eMule only shares the incoming folder that I download to though.

Maybe I am concerned over nothing?! lol

If eMule was showing a larger upload figure than NetLimiter then clearly one of them is wrong. What did the eMule stats show in the case where NetLimiter displayed 330MB?

Quite often P2P or Torrent clients say that you're uploading at a certain speed, when in reality it is faster than that.
For example, or uTorrent, I limit upload speed to about 20kb/s, and it never goes higher than that on uTorrent - except when I look at netmeter its between 20 and 30kb/s.

Hello again

I didn't think to check emule's stats. I couldn't get a daily figure for the time it was 300MB plus but my cumulative upload figure which basically starts from last October is 16.50 GB.

This seems a lot more realistic and certainly seems to confirm that Netmeter must have been reporting my uploads from my ADSL modem incorrectly. An example is that one particular day I downloaded 1.3 GB (Used P2P) but netmeter only showed my uploads as 103.7 KB!!

An example now I am on my Wireless router is that yesterday I downloaded 3MB (No P2P) and uploaded 670KB. This seems more realistic to me.

What does everyone reckon??

It sounds like Netmeter wasn't seeing eMule upload traffic at all when you used a modem. Perhaps there was a bug in the modem drivers not reporting upload stats correctly, whereas the ethernet drivers you're using with the router are fine.
