Really poor speeds

I have recently signed up to Sky Connect (8MB) having previously been with Pipex 2MB service. I assumed I would receive a much quicker download speed going with Sky, as every check I did suggested my BT line would support 8MB. Indeed the Sky router gives a D/L sync speed of 8032kbps. However, my speeds seem to be a heck of a lot slower, averaging out at about 500kbps each time I do a speed test. Downloading a 5mb podcast gives me no more than 40kbps D/L speed and takes several minutes!. Not good I'm sure you'd agree. I have spent countless hours on to the Sky techies and to be honest thay have been really helpful, and my situation has been raised to tier 2 on a couple of occasions, but despite trying every troubleshooting procedure being attempted more than once, Sky and myself are at a loss as to the slow speeds.
In essence, my line appears to be capable of 8MB speeds, tier 2 have confirmed this with BT. My router syncs at over 8MB. But between my router and my PC (brand new laptop, hardwired to router), there seems to be a catastrophic loss of speed.

Any suggestions?

P.S. My exchange is about 750 yards away from my house.

You need to run the BT speedtest to find out your IP profile 1st.
The test is a bit intermittent so you may have to persevere.

3 suggestions.

1. The times you are running the tests you are likely to get very low speeds if there is a problem with your ISP - but they will always tell you there isn't! Try running a test before 9am, I'm not with Sky but I can get 4000+Kbps then, in the evenings it can be under four hundred! See the Sky forum for other users experiences.

2. Try the BT speedtester at http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ It tends to get over-loaded and transfer you to a similar sounding (old) one http://www.test.speedtester.bt.com/ But if you can get the new one as above, it takes a couple of minutes or so on collecting info, then goes to the Testing page, for not too long, then to the Results page. On the Testing page it tells you your configured speed, and on the Results page it tells you your IP Profile. These are the same thing. If you get transferred to the old one, on the results page you will see test.speedtester.bt.com on the page, and just a speed achieved - that's not what we need to know. If you get the IP Profile one, post that and the result.

3. If you know how to get stats out of your modem/router, then post those as well. It helps more knowledgeable people than me around here to diagnose your problem. If you don't know how to get the stats, again there is a link to a site that tells you how for a wide range of them, but I haven't got it to hand. With luck someone else will post it.

Sorry Rogan, not trying to steal your thunder. Took a while composing mine, and looking for the router diagnostics link which I didn't find, so I didn't know your post was there.

Also, for some reason I can't log into the speedtester, I'm not quite sure what login details it requires. I've tried my Sky log in details but they don't work.

It wants the full login username your router uses to connect to the internet.

Hi guys

This is becoming really frustrating. I have been trying to get my IP profile for the last 4 nights, unsuccessfully. On the few occasions I have managed to get passed the 'site busy' message, I have failed to get passed the login details part with the following error message -

"System Error Image not loaded

The login name entered on this tool doesnt match that discovered by querying the network for your domain name. Please check your telephone number (or user name) and try again. If problem persists please contact your CP."

I have phoned Sky regarding this as my Sky user name does not work, but the Techie guy i spoke to had no idea what I was talking about and fobbed me off after putting me on hold for 10 mins.

Is there any other way to get your IP profile?

No other way of getting a definite answer, but we can give you a very close idea of what your IP profile is if you go to the link below, download a file from it and tell us the average/optimal consistent speed you get in kb/s.

Please be aware that the BT tester often returns error messages when in fact you are entering the correct information, at busy times this can be 50% of the tries.
