Phone effect on connection

[link to this post]

I am on the limit on line length (3.9Km) from exchange. However, my ISP insisted that I should get 2Mb so change my connection to a fixed speed. I did say I did not think this was a good idea so when it was changed that was the end of my broadband.

Just by chance, I disconnected my phone and I have broadband back but you can see my stats are not that good:-

DSL Status Connection Status Connected Upstream Rate (Kbps) 288 Downstream Rate (Kbps) 2272 US Margin 19 DS Margin 3 Modulation GDMT LOS Errors 0 DS Line Attenuation 63 US Line Attenuation 63 Path Mode Fast Path
My question is plugging in a phone just enough to bring my connection down, as my stats are poor.

If you have an NTE5, try to get the line stats while plugged into the test socket, which will give some idea of the best you can expect. If this is actually good enough, then you need to attend to what is on your premises, but otherwise, I would suggest getting the speed cut to 1Mb/s or even 0.5 Mb/s

I think the speed will have to be cut

The 63db attenuation doesn't look right for a line as short as you say it is ?

I thought 3.9Km over what is required for 2Mb connection

Soz, you are talking vanilla DSL, in which case it's not distance that matters, but DS attenuation being sub 43db.....this is all a little bye the bye as a Max product would often give higher speeds on such a line.

I presume the phone you unplugged was into a filter ?

Yes it is plugged ito a filter, I am supprised that a phone would have a difference on the connection

Why do you think that there is nothing which can be done with your premises wiring?

I have my master socket with a filter with just my router and phone, there is no other wiring. I have been advised by a BT engineer that aftyer checking my line SNR there is no way my line can take 2Mb without problems.

OK, if all you have is a master socket, that settles it. It might be interesting to try the effect of adifferent phone and of a different filter.
