Sync Speeds

[link to this post]

I would appreciate some advice before I contact my ISP again. I have been on ADSL Max since April last year. Samknows advises that my line should support 5mb or above. However, for the year that I have had it, I have averaged 4mb sync - never worse than 3.5mb.

I got a disconnection on Friday and then synced at 1472 - I'm now syncing at 1792. I ran the BT Speedtest and got the following:

'Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1792 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1432 kbps'

Can someone explain what the IP profile is - and is it set by my ISP (f2s) or by BT. My speeds have more than halved and I'd like to understand why.

thanks

Your modem will talk to the exchange as fast as possible (up to 8MB).

BT keep track of your lowest modem connection rate and drop your profile to this.

If you start to keep faster connections your profile will be raised to the faster rate after 3 days.

The profile is the maximum rate that BT will send data to you.

At some stage you must have had a noisy line which dropped your profile.

Sorry about the explanation. Did it in a bit of a rush. Should give you some idea. Do a google for BRAS profile and you'll find a better description.

If you are still syncing at 1792 it indicates there is a fault somewhere on the line. You will need to run the BT speed test 3 or 4 times at various times of the day and get these figures before your ISP/BT will investigate (I think - check the archives). You should first of all try to check that it's not your internal wiring that is causing the problem - see main-site FAQs, archives.

Thanks for your very informative replies so far. I've a couple more questions - hope you don't mind.

Regarding noise on my internal circuits - could that be caused by a dodgy filter?
Over the last couple of weeks I've been going into the Router and disconnecting from the net every couple of days for an hour or so. (Due to teenagers and homework) - would the exchange see that as us not being able to maintain a connection and drop the syc speed as a result?

Thanks again

I don't think the disconnections would cause that problem. A faulty filter certainly could. I'm afraid I'm a novice in this area. Look through the archives and FAQs for proper info (or hope somebody more knowledgable replies).
