ADSL2 versus ADSL

I am with Newnet and although happy with them I am just wondering if I can ge a bit more out of my line. Bt say I can get 5.5mb. The highest data rate I can hold is 4.5mb. I sync at 5162 ,anything higher and I lose connection overnight. My SNR varies between 16db during the day and 10db overnight. My line attenution is 42.5db
My question is if I move to TalkTalk who use ADSL2 technology(capped at 8mb) am I likely to get a faster downstream connection I understand that ADSL2 performs better over longer lines. Or is the SNR fluctuation still going to cause a problem.

TalkTalk will cause the problem. I'd stay away from them if I were you

ISP aside, I doubt ADSL2+ (different to ADSL2 and I am not aware anyone is using ADSL2 in the UK) will benefit you. Above about 40dB the advantages of ADSL2+ are pretty much gone on a typical line.

TalkTalk are using ADSL2 on their LLU service.

Both ADSL2 and ADSL2+ are perhaps 5-10% more efficient than ADSL1 under the same conditions. They allow sync rates intermediate to the ADSL1 32kbps boundaries, they have better coding gain, they allow single bit tones, & they have less signalling overhead. However a chane in target margin when changing service can swamp this, as can normal noise variation on longer lines.

A potentially more significant benefit in the longer term is the reduction in crosstalk because of automatic power reduction, but this is largely hidden as long as BT users on the same exchange are still stuck with ADSL1 technology.
