Woosh test brings the line back up....

Chaps,

We have an ADSL line here which has started dropping and random intervals - it is always down on a Monday morning and sometimes during the rest of the week as well. It has worked without a hitch for a year or two, up until the end of March this year.

When I ring the ISP they go through all the usual stuff - microfilters (don't apply cos it is a faceplate job) - fax machine (line stays down when it is unplugged, and stays in sych when it is plugged back in again) - noisy (plug in an analogue phone as well as the fax machine and no noise at all) then they get BT to run a woosh test - all of a sudden the line pops back into synch; I don't know if it resynchs because of or in spite of the whoosh test but the timing of the test and the resynch of the line seem a little too close to be totally coincidental.

The line has been in use for years with no trouble, and nothing has changed in the building since we started using it - except we did get the faceplate fitted by a BT engineer sometime early last year, due trouble we had with a microfilter.

It actually doesn't affect the users that much, because we have a load balancing router (Cyclone NetEyes 200) which switches to a backup ADSL line when the main one drops.

Any Ideas? I am all out of rational excuses, and so it seems are the ISP (not BT)

It could be a dry joint but it sounds very much like a capacitor problem somewhere. I don't know if this is likely where telecoms circuits are concerned but it is a fairly common fault in much electronic circuitry - I believe that the term often used to describe it is "a lazy capacitor".
