Should I get a new router?

I had my BT BB upgraded to 8 meg last night. I checked this morning and the stats when I log into my wireless router say the dowstream speed is approx 7.5 meg. However the speedtest on my PC (via wireless) gives me somthing more like 2 meg.

I have an old Netgear wirless router, I think the DG834 or something (im at work and cant remember). Will I need a new router which is capable of transmitting faster, is the old router acting like a choke?

Download the freeware TCPOptimizer and run it on the PC connected by wireless. My laptop which used to show roughly 2 Mbps went up to 6 Mbps.

You'll just have to put up with this for 10 days or so, after which time, your correct profile and speeds will have been negotiated. I doubt that there's an ISP out there who would seriously consider any action until at least then.

Two things to remember:
ADSL MAX is an up to 8M service.
A new connection undergoes a 10 day "training period" where the eventual connection speed is negotiated according to line etc conditions.

If you go much more than 10 days at 2M, come back and post your line stats along with, and this is important, the full results including the IP Profile figure of the BT Speed Test.

But doesnt the fact that my router stats look ok (approx 7.5meg) indicate that the problem is on my side?

Sometimes your IP Profile can get stuck at 2M so even though you are Syncing @7.5M your throughput will be no more than 2M.

As Deadbeat said most ISP's will not do anything until the 10 day training period is up. What does the BT speedtest say your IP profile is?

You have nothing to complain about. The sync and profile are as high as you can get on standard ADSL. The throughput is reasonable.

Yeh, speed looks good ( i am about 30 foot from the exchange in a new house so the cabling is probibly good too) but problem that speed test results show...
