Socket help

Hi all,

The only visible socket we have in the house is in the hall and i'm not sure if it is the master socket or not, but i've put a filter faceplate on it.

I have been under the floor to see where the cable is coming from and it runs up the to the kitchen, which is about 3 mtrs away from the hall socket.

Where the cable runs up, it's behind the fridge and freezer, so to save a little hassle, is it necessary to filter the master socket if one's there?

The fridge and freezer is built in, and I don't wan't to take them out only to find there is nothing there.


The kitchen was altered six or seven year ago before we moved in, so I don't know how it was before regarding the layout, or if perhaps there was a socket in the kitchen but maybe they done away with it and moved it to the hall when the kitchen was altered.

Also, does the blue cable with white stripes connect to A or B on the filter ?

Its anyones guess really what is behind the fridge, other than the socket you can see, what other phone extensions are there in the home?

As for the A or B question, I don't quite follow. A photo and what is connected to the other end of the blue cable pair is needed.

Shows the back of a faceplate, with pins 2 & 5 holding the blue wires for use with a phone extension. Connecting to A & B on this socket implies you are trying to run the ADSL wiring to another location this scenario with a slightly different design of faceplate can be seen at http://www.farina1.com/faceplate/Data/page.htm?5,0 and I only used the blue pair to connect an ADSL extension, since they had no mains socket nearby for the ADSL modem.

In the second picture the pins 2,3,5 are for use for a voice extension that is filtered.

We took the fridge out and we found an old blank faceplate with which the main phone line enters the house.

Now, when the kitchen was altered they have connected to the main line and extended it to the hall which is about 3mtrs away and the only socket in the house.The original faceplate in the hall was just a normal telephone connection, it wasn't the bt master faceplate,with which i've changed for the adsl faceplate.

The wiring is connected to a and b on the faceplate with the RJ11 cable running upstair to the router from the front of the faceplate and also the phone is connected to the adsl faceplate.Is this correct ?

Is it better to add a seperate faceplate for the phone ?

We are going to remove the hall socket so what would be the best thing to do ?

Do I need to filter the main line coming in immediately, or would it be ok extend the line coming in about 500mm and fit the adsl faceplate behind the kitchen unit for easier access and then from there running the RJ11 cable upstair ???

Or, seeing as there is no bt master faceplate would it be worth phoning bt to see if they fit the master box and alter the wiring ?

This is confusing, many of us would read that as a filtered faceplate fitted onto an NTE5 master socket, but you might be meaning a square faceplate with an unfiltered and filtered socket.

hmm. Did the socket you removed have extra components like a cylindrical capacitor in it ? if so that was a master and you've done the wrong thing fitting that faceplate - which is basically a flat microfilter.

Regarding the original socket, I can't remember Phil.

It was over a year ago I fitted the adsl faceplate, but I did keep the original socket.

So, what do you recommend I do ?

I'm upgrading to be* adsl2+ on Tuesday and obviously wan't to get the best out of it.

Do I need to fit a master BT NTE5 thingy to supply line and then an extension up to the router ?

Seems like you have put a non-master filtered socket in to replace what may or may not have been a master socket.

If at this point you have no NTE5 you should get BT to fit one under "regularisation of illicit master socket"

this bit of the system isn't yours to play with.

Mind you given all the fiddling they've done then just fitting an NT5 box and a faceplate is at least a step in the right direction. But if ever a BT engineer visits it will be obvious it was not a proper fit as the BT or Openreach logo are missing.

Is there a product page for this TLC product, I'd be concerned that this may actually include no filter and just be an RJ11 and BT socket adaptor, which has had broadband written on it to improve sales.

It seems to be the one at the bottom of this page & claims to be filtered.
