left bulldog for sky

[link to this post]

Hi I have just Joined sky 16mb max and not getting very good sync speeds. I was with bulldog geting very close to the 16mb. take a look at the stats from the sagam supplied router. running on adsl2+

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9926 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.5 db 8.0 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 17.5 db

surely I should be getting more that this or is it because of the training period?

It certainly looks a bit slow. I get 15Mbps+ on a line with 24dB attenuation. I can only suggest you look for ways to reduce noise on the line; have you tried connecting to the hidden test socket inside the removeable bottom half of the master socket? Have you tried connecting with your old Bulldog router? (Not sure if that's possible with Sky). It may not work but you should get sync.

There is no training period on Sky Max (LLU).

Try a different router - you won't be able to log in unless you've discovered your login details, but it should sync and give stats even when not logged in.

I spent almost an hour on the phone to Sky and talked to the engineer, i was told that my line wont support 16mb as there are too many crc errors, he also told me according to the checker I am 5.5km from the exchange yet according to samknows I am only 217 meters away and that I should only be getting 5.2mb so the 10mb i am getting is far better. I dont seem to be getting though that I was getting 16mb with BULLDOG and that I am only 217 meters from the exchange (as the crows fly) I do wonder if they are telling me the truth or they just dont want to get me full speed.

any suggestions on what I can do know would be greatful.

What sync rate do you get from the test socket? If it's substantially more than 10Mbps then you need to improve your internal wiring.

Not that much more, since Sky have a SNR margin target of 6.5dB, and yours is 7.6dB.

You won't get much more with that level of noise.

Well, if you're getting that from the master socket with no other extensions or phones connected, then the problem is with either your line or the exchange equipment, and you must somehow persuade Sky that your line is capable of more. I'm told that the best time to talk to the techie guys on Level-3 support is about 3AM in the morning, but I've never tried it myself (never had to)
