Strange wiring on NTE5 - installing iPlate

I'm trying to install an iplate. I have the right socket (BT piper logo and split in two) but when i take the faceplate off my wiring looks like it is 'behind' the box, just like this one here:

As such, I can't install iPlate in the normal way. All I've done is put iplate in, then put the old face plate on top of it (which doesn't have any wires attacehd to it) and then plugged my line back in.

Am I going to experience any benefit from it installed in this way? Or do I need to delve further?

Do you have any extensions in the property? Faceplate only has wires connected if you have an extension.

Seeing more than two wires inside the master socket is not unusual as the wire coming in from the outside would will support more than one telephone, i.e. may have 4/6 wires or more.

I have no extensions save for one that is actually plugged into the box itself (i.e. i have a splitter plugged in where one line goes to kitchen (phone) and the other goes to modem).

Does that mean that iPlate won't work for me? Do I have any other options?

If plugged into the front of the box then the iPlate will help in the same way as it does for hardwired extensions.

You may find that if the modem cable is not a twisted pair cable that buying a twisted pair may buy you a fraction more speed, depends on what the noise in the area is like.

You can asses the possible improvements by plugging the modem into the test socket and seeing what connection speed, attenuation and noise margin you have.

Thanks for your reply, I'll keep the iPlate in then. I'm no expert on phone wiring but I'll investigate your suggestions.

I do have a massive great extension lead going to my modem from the socket which I know is not ideal - would taking the pins out of the connector such that only 2 and 5 are left do me any good?

The iPlate filters the ring wire anyway. You should have seen an improvement already.

Compare what you get as-is with what you get directly into the inner socket - if there is only a marginal difference (which I suspect there will be as the biggest problem is already cured by the iPlate) then you can relax. If not look into replacing the plug in extension with a hard wired one using quality twisted pair cable.

I have literally only just plugged in iplate and I'm up from 3.9 to 4.4 mbps on a '8mbps' connection. I've read that it may take a couple of days to get up to speed but it's already a nice little jump.

The two to three days refers to the amount of time before the abysmal BTw system accepts that your line is running better and bumps your IP profile to permit faster downloading. It could easily be nearer 5 days with only a smallish change in sync.

It is possible that your actual sync may still improve if that dodgy extension earned you a higher target noise margin than the default 6dB. Check those router stats and see what they say yours is straight after a resync. Don't go resyncing it too often though or it may slow down the DLM decision to allow you more speed.
