Extension cable

[link to this post]

quick run down:

live in an old house (over 120 years old) my master bt socket is located a very very long way away from all signs of civilzation in my house, from the master socket i have an extension cable (bog standard few quid phone one) and another, and a few more along with a couple of filters.

While i do get my full speed broadband (8mb) I do notice lag sometimes whilst browsing, and the main thing I notice is playing online, I seem to have a strange lag where I hear things first then see what it was (happens in various games, and no I'm not mental), I know it's not my computer and the last thing I can think of is the rustic old extension cable.

My plan is from the master socket, have the filter plugged in directly keep the current cables where they are and use that for phone and buy a very long RJ11 extension cable, even when the current cables where new I had this problem.

So does anyone think that having a direct RJ11 extension cable from master socket to router would be worthwhile even if it's just to clear the line up a bit as I read somewhere that telephone extensions can't carry the digital adsl signal properly (however true that is)

Thanks for readin and sorry that was so long winded.

The main problem with long extensions is with noise pickup, and the only way you'll "clear the line up a bit" is to shorten it, because an "RJ11 cable" won't be any better than the extension wiring (in fact, there's every chance that it could be worse). Instead of having the router at the end of a very long extension, locate the router close to the master socket, and fit a filtered faceplate on the master socket. Then you can run ethernet cables from your router to your PC(s), and ethernet wiring is largely unaffected by noise. You will also have the advantage that phone extensions wired from the filtered faceplate won't need further filtering.
