Hi all,
When i say "rationalising" what i mean is that having switched from cable to ADSL2, I need to rejig my phone lines inside my house to (a) tidy things up (b) hopefully improve line states (3) resite/rejib my small network so that it fits well with the incoming line position.
Now then, i appreciate the whole issue of not being allowed to "tamper" with incoming sockets/lines etc..
The thing is,that it appears that openreach do charge crazy money for what is a very simple job.
My situation is that my phone line is ducted in my street and then emerges on my outside wall and enters a little grey junction box. From there, there is a rather weathered and weedy bit of grey wire which goes around the outside wall, finally enters the house, does a lap over two door frames, around the skirting etc and finally ends up in an old style mastersocket (no removeable bottom segment)
My ideal would be to shorten that bit of wire between the little grey external box, even replce it with a decent bit of wire (twisted pair? ),then fit a filtered master socket as closely as short a length as poss inside, line off to phone line, line into ADSL2 modem and maybe some Cat5E from there onwards the idea being to give the best possible conditions that i can internally and minimise/eliminate internally generated noise/crosstalk etc.
In theory then, whats the best cable i could use between little grey external box and new mastersocket? i.e BT approved ?

Hi dooper,
BT will not allow you to fit your own wiring on their side of the master socket to your home. If you do it yourself and get it wrong, you will be in a world of hurt.
For £25 (or thereabouts) BT will fit a new master socket inside your house as close to the grey junction box as they can get. Their new master socket will have the equivalent of the ring wire disconnected. They will connect your existing "round the houses" wiring to this for your existing telephones.
You can then connect the router to this new master socket
Regards,
Felix.

What sort of connection do you get now, as it maybe a case of a lot of work for little or no likely reward.

BT Uses CAT3 wires, however there is a "CAT3" outside version.
The newer boxes hae the lower removable plate you can pull off and connect all your inside house wiring to, behind this is a master socket (phone), the idea being the lower plate actually plugs in to this. Its a good idea...
Its this plate i removed and placed an NTE5 microfilter on (nice idea) works well.
Many Thanks

You forgot to mention that £25.00 + Vat £28.50 + call out £113.00 + vat and then £85.00 +vat for the first hour or part of...Just call it £200.00
Alternatively buy an Adsl nation XTF filtered socket and cat 5 twisted shielded pair wire.
I having the old style non Nte5 socket did this and what a difference it made.
cost £30.00.
I connected to the old socket by just removing the face plate and attacked wires to back of face plate. All nice and neat.

I connected to the old socket by just removing the face plate and attacked wires to back of face plate. All nice and neat. and contrary to BT T&C which you signed up to. The chances of being caught out are slight but the way to do it without breaching the T&C is via a plug into the front. Your way is certainly a lot neater though.
If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Oh I agree, but as BTOR wont install a modern Nte5 unless i cough up £200.00. I mean I have only paid rental for 30 years but that counts for nowt. Really BT should update customers Master sockets to allow equality of service. The Old master socket 30years of age no longer meets modern day requirements and therefore is not fit for purpose.

No I didn't. The cost is £25 + VAT See http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Ex...
Conversion of hard-wired master socket to Linebox and Regularisation of illicit master socket:
Per line - normal £25.00 Exc VAT £28.75 Inc VAT

I am well aware of what it says, and how much it quotes. However I wish you luck if you think that is all it will cost you.
I have for 3 months been through hell and high water to try and get my ancient line box changed to NTE5. I failed miserably..I have all the emails etc etc from BT still.
Yes I too believed that it could be done for that price. How wrong I was my friend.
Having said that I wish you luck in your endeavour.
If per chance you succeed then do come back and let us know.

Here's what I've just been quoted:
As per our updates the charges for master socket is £51.30 incl VAT and the engineer visit charges will be £115. Therefore, the charges in total will be £166.30 incl VAT
Bit over the top I feel.
