BT Home Hub 2.0 Is Slow

[link to this post]

Hi guys, I just got a HH 2.0 and got it set up no problem at all. I am using a iMac running OS 10.4.11. I was previously using a Netgear DG834G and was getting a download speed of 284kb/s. With the HH I am getting the following results:

Download 1.51 mb/s
Upload 0.32 mb/s

Now, I am aware of the 10 day thing however my question is does this apply to me seeing as how I have been using BT Broadband for the last 5 or 6 years? I recently renewed my yearly contract with them and that is why I got the HH. I have only plugged the HH in today so maybe I have to leave the HH plugged in for at least 10 days before my speed will increase?

I also thought I should mention that the channel is set to 11 and the Wireless Interface type is b/g

Here is some more information:

Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 0:09:33
Downstream 1,760 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 9.5 dB / 19.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 57.0 dB / 26.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 17.9 dBm / 12.3 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local) 0
Loss of Signal (Local) 0
Loss of Power (Local) 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 1811 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local) 0

I rebooted it in the last 10 or so minutes to see if my upstream speed would be better but, as you can see, it hasn't changed.

The upstream sync rate of 448kbps is the normal maximum for a non-business product.

You mention a download rate of 284kbps with the Netgear, do you mean 2840kbps?

Perhaps your target SNR margin has increased to 9 from the default 6dB. That might account for the difference you are seeing in sync rates.

Have you disconnected the bell wire?

I haven't tried the bell wire thing yet.

I just plugged in my Netgear DG834G, on which I was getting the aforementioned speeds, and it is syncing at 2.8mb/s but only downloading at 1.7mb/s - the same as the HH. Maybe it's something to do with the line this evening or maybe BT have throttled the download rates again?

That's normal.

BT have an IP profiling system which limits your download speeds to your worst recent sync rate. Recent means 1 to 5 days. i.e. if you stay sync'd at a higher rate the profile will take 1 to 5 days to rise.

See end of http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adslmax_explained.php

So I should just leave it and it'll come alright in time?

Basically yes, time cures this problem. However it might be worth checking the stats when plugged in to the test socket within the BT master socket (if you have a modernish installation). This would let you know the best sync rate you can achieve - and would indicate if you need to remove the bell wire or otherwise improve your internal phone wiring.

OK thanks for all your help, John. I'll leave it for at least 10 days and see what the craic is. If it's not better then I will have a look at the bell wire.
