Broadband speeds

Well I used to ger 4.5 -5 meg internet speeds a year or two back but recently I have been told the most I can expect is 3meg. Disapointed by this I have:
1) Fitted the newest BT mastersocket with no bell wire
2) added an ADSLnation filtered socket to front.
3) connected netgear 834 router direct to it.

my figures are now as follows;
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4320 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 12.2 db 19.0 db

What can I expect from a decent ISP with these figures, is anything wrong with them?

It looks like you've been put on a 12db profile, which is why you are getting lower speeds. Your line must have had stability problems at lower noise margins.

With that sync you will be on a 3500 IP Profile so with a 'decent ISP' you should get nearly that actual throughput most of the time. With a non-decent ISP you will get a much lower throughput during busy times.

EDIT: Changing providers wont change your sync (connection speed), unless you have an LLU'd exchange.

As the other poster has said, it looks like your Target SNR has been increased at some point which has in turn lowered your sync speed. This may improve now you have tidied your wiring situation up.
If things go to plan for you BT's system may start to reduce your Target SNR every couple of weeks or so if things are stable. The Target SNR is reduced in 3db steps (i.e. 9db then down to 6db) each step can give you an extra 400-800kbps approx.

Trouble is this system doesn't always work - time will tell...
