Master Socket Help PLease

[link to this post]

Hi everyone,

I have a small problem, recently my download speed dropped from 11meg to 3meg, i called sky and we did some testing and when in the test socket it goes back up to 11meg again, its been fine for 2 years and only went down to 3 meg about 5 days ago when in the master socket...
The man at sky said they dont support anything past the test socket so how am i meant to get it back up to 11meg i cant just leave it in the test socket, well i could but my mum is screwing about the eye sore of an exposed socket so can some please help me on what im meant to do, he didnt even tell me how my socket could of been fine all this time and then suddenly it doesnt work anymore and wants to go at 3meg?

i also noticed on a side note the my ringer wires are setup in a very funky fashion, ill attach a picture...

It looks as though the orange pair is being used to either feed another socket or is in fact the incoming BT pair, rather than being used as ringing wire/s. Some internal photos of any junction boxes and extensions may help.

If connecting the faceplate screws up your sync rate it can only be because there is a fault on the wiring to the socket fed by the blue/white pair because that is all that will additionally get connected when you fit the faceplate. That socket cannot be working right now. If you disconnect the wires from the faceplate you can replace it (thereby curing your earache) and there should be no impact on your sync.

The orange/white pair are a complete mystery based on the photo but right now they are not connected to your phone wiring at all.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

how easy it to replace, do i need any special tools other then a philips or a flat head?

Because if i dnt ill just take one of the front plates of one of the extension sockets and swap them voer as the other sockets are just used for our sky boxes to call home...

Well aslong as the ringer circuits arent connected i dnt need to bother with a bit i-plate then?

P.S. i think its because a long time ago we had two lines in the house with two different numbers and i think the second ran of the organe pair untill we got it disconnected by BT, would that explain it?

You need a krone tool or similiar to reconnect the wires otherwise you risk damaging the terminals.
I'd suggest you put everything back together and disconnect everything else from the line, especially the sky box's. Then reboot the router and see what happens.
If you get 'normal' line rate back then reconnect one device at a time and reboot.
Its quite possible that something connected to the line is causing the low line rate and sky box's are one susspect.

I think we may be at cross purposes here.

I am suggesting that you remove the blue/white pair from terminals #2 and #5 on the faceplate (by carefully pulling them upwards)
Tuck the wires away somewhere in the space in the backplate.
Unplug your filter from the test socket.
Push the faceplate back on the back of the master.
Plug the filter back into the faceplate.

Specialist tools so far amount to a finger and an opposable thumb.

If you still have the screws you took out when you removed the faceplate screw them back in using a screwdriver. If not it really isn't a big deal.

The faceplate from an extension socket will not fit on the master.

This will not fix any problem with the internal wiring - in fact it will not be connected at all but it isn't now anyway. What it will fix is the earbending you are getting because the faceplate is off.

====

If your Sky box is able to dial with the wiring as it is right now then something is very very wrong. Taking the faceplate off should disconnect ALL your extension sockets. If is is connected and not filtered then that is the cause of your problem.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

if you can have the router at the master socket a fully filtered faceplate would help. Or you can disconnect all the extensions as has been suggested.

1. A photo of the wiring in other sockets (and junction boxes if used) may clarify why the speed drops with extensions connected.

2. I'm not convinced that the suggestion that you remove the blue/white pair before replacing the faceplate is going to give you any less grief from your mum if the extensions are permanently disconnected!

3. Are you sure that the orange/white pair are unused? A photo of the BT side of the NTE5 should clarify this.
Note: You are not allowed to make changes to this side of the wiring.

ok i removed the latest sky box and now its syncing at around 9.2 meg, still slower than the test scket by 2 meg but faster than before, im guessing that blu wiring must go to the socket in the bedroom and when BT last came over they must have removed the wiring sky put there as they did all sorts of funky things when installing my line from work, then decided to just gave me a new socket by going from the outside of the house instead of inside?

update, removed the 2nd box and now syncing at 10.5 meg... im guess im gonna have to work out which wiring running along the skirting is alive and which is dead, have three white cables....

thanks for all your help guys, Sky were gonna charge me a bomb to do the work...
