Adsl through electric adapters..Netgear...

[link to this post]

I will try and make this as simple as possible regarding a few issues when downloading from xbox live.

Since i have always used a wireless connection in my old house been that the pc was in the living room connected to a netgear wirless router Dg834n with occasional download problems especially slow on the playstation store but nothing to serious.

Now after moving in to our new house and finding out that the builders of this property have seen fit to put telephone sockets in basically every room of the house bar the living room where i have all my consoles.

So i went out and and got some netgear homeplug av network kit and a netgear 5-port ethernet switch as suggested by a user on these forums a while back.

After hooking all this up and connecting the playstation 3 and xbox 360 i thought i would have to change the settings from wireless to wired ethenet, seems the playstation and xbox connected without me doing this though.

Now for the problem and also the better news, since i upgraded my old playstation to a new slim version i had to download the games that i purchased over the past few years.

So i started with one that was nearly 500mb and i was astonished to find it downloaded it from the network in about 20 minutes, normally this would have taken 2 to 3 hours with the wireless only a few metres away.

Now this morning i have been downloading a game from xbox live which is 360mb in size since 11.am and its now 3.30 pm.

To say this is slow is a under statement as before the xbox live service downloaded 3 times faster on wireless than the playstation network.

The only thing that seems strange is the lights on the hub are green [the best] for the playstation when connected to the playstation network but Amber when connected to the xbox live service, both are plugged into the hub with the same ethernet cables but both giving difference performance.

I have even gone directly into the xbox 360 from the homeplug and it made no difference, now this could be a xbox live issue but i dont think so.

After speeking with someone today from the xbox live helpline i was told to delete my gamertag and that would put this right but like i thought it did not and how deleting a gamertag makes your speed problems go away is beyond belief.

I know its not the equipment as i was overjoyed at the speed the playstation 3 downloaded and nothing is different.

Which exact model of netgear switch?

It may be the PS3 is connecting at 100Mbps reliably, but the XBox live is flapping between 10/100/1000 or similar. Does the XBox let you specific the Ethernet connection speed.

Also if the wireless is still switched on it may do something odd like switch between the two.

My PS3 can be slow to download when a new game has just appeared, i.e. the server holding the game can be the slow point, so if a popular game it may be that. A good check is to try downloading a file from your local network, at its simplest Windows Media Player 11 can run as a media server for consoles.

Thanks for the reply Andrew the netgear Switch model number is xav8101 200mbps whatever that means,im not up on the technical side of things so when i have a few issues like this i am not quite sure what direction to take especially when the one console works extremly fast when downloading and the other one is a joke.

The wireless wont be on because i have unplugged the network adapter from the back, when i connect to xbox live it seems fast enough but its really bad downloading.

I think its the flapping between10/20/100 problem so i need to find out if i can change that setting.

When i do a test connection on xbox live it says its all fine and dandy and connected through ethernet.

I cannot find a xav8101 device on the internet

200Mbps implies their powerline switch range, which the UK website only shows 85Mbps kit.

Does it let you download files on an xbox e.g. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html they should be fast, we even have enough memory to ensure the 1GB file is served from memory rather than disk

Sorry Andrew its a xavB101 Not 8 as i stated, failing eyesite and old age catching up with this gaming old timer.

Downloaded a 10mb file in 15 seconds on that link you just gave me,dont know exactly what this proves and how it has anything to do with xbox live but you know far more than me and im all for as much help sorting this out.

Been on a few forums looking at similar problems that others are experiencing which boils down to clearing the catche which i have done.deleting gamertag [dont make sense ] and getting rid of downloaded demos of trial games.

Spent hours last night trying to get this amber light to go green like the playstation 3 but with no luck.

10MB in 15 seconds, is 5.3Mbps per second, how does that stand up to comparison with your broadband connections speed?

It sounds a good speed to me, basically a 1GB demo should download in 30 minutes.

Suggestion is that the problem from the place you were visiting to download the big files previously.

Well i am getting a 8 meg connection where i live now opposed to the limited 2 meg at my old place in the country.

Well my router shows my download speed to be 8 meg but i think its more realistic to say around 6 meg.

This is the result of a speedtest done on your website just a few seconds ago.

Speed Test Results
Date 24/09/09 14:38:23
Speed Down 6365.39 Kbps ( 6.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 375.97 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.thinkbroadband.com

Link: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...
You can give out this URL to other people to show them this speedtest result.

Your speeds are shown in red on the graph below.

A more correct phrase is probably this

My router shows a connection speed of 8182Kbps, which means a maximum download speed on the computer of ~7Mbps, so a speed test of 6365Kbps is pretty good.

Thus the ~5Mbps on the XBox test you did shows nothing wrong with the XBox or devices you are using.

Thanks for all your help andrew much appreciated,i have gone into the playstation network settings and have Duplex mentioned in the settings.

This is set to auto detect and works like a dream, now there is no mention or any setting to see what the xbox 360 is set to.

Having now typed this in Google [xbox 360 Duplex settings i have found out how to possibly change it to see if it makes difference to the xbox service.

Here is a brief description as to how to find it.

NIC Duplex SettingsYour NIC duplex speed settings must be set to 'AUTO' as an incorrect settings may lead to a 'Cable Unplugged' message in Windows (Speed set too high) or an unstable connection (Speed set too low).

To check the settings in Windows, go to the START menu, then RUN and type in 'ncpa.cpl'. In the Network Connections menu right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. Next in the new window that has popped up click on the 'Configure' button and this will lead you to your NIC properties. Select the 'Advanced' tab' and you will be able to check your 'Speed & Duplex' settings on your NIC

Since on the pc it is set to auto then changing it may not make much difference, its a xbox 360 stting that i would like to see.

As I said previously, I think you are chasing a none problem really, the download test suggests the network is not the reason for the slow download
