I live at Lakeside - several hundred metres from the Thales NOC. I've seen work on White Rose Way (by Evans Halshaw), around the Keepmoat Stadium and Royal Mail sorting office, as well as Lakeside, so I think they are starting at the NOC and working their way out from there. Work has also been taking place in the town centre on High Street and Silver Street.

It's appears that it's only the construction that has been taking place. They finished at Lakeside last week. No sign of the fibre optic cables or connecting to the BT cabling. The construction at Lakeside was going on for a couple of weeks, so it's going to take a while to get Doncaster covered.

I was expecting a 1.8 metre high cabinet next to the BT cabinet, based upon what I read about BT in Muswell Hill. But Digital Region only have a manhole cover next to the BT cabinet near my house, which shows "DRL" on it.

From the DR documents, it appeared that the cabinets would be connected to the BT exchange. The construction at Lakeside has invovled digging up the roads and pavements towards to the NOC, not towards the BT exchange. Maybe they are connecting Lakeside to Doncaster exchange. The houses at Lakeside were initially connected to Doncaster when they were built in 1999, but BT moved many of the lines to Cantley exchange in 2003 (with new phone numbers) as the cabling was too long for ADSL.

Some more info from Digital Region (for more have a look at their website):-

"The Digital Region network will be capable of 50Mb/s download and 22Mb/s upload, although it is unlikely service providers will take the full full bandwidth capability initially - possibly 25Mb/s download.

In addition to the additional bandwidth capability, Digital Region will provide these additional benefits that are not provided in other UK networks today -

1. Guaranteed bandwidth
2. Quality of Service, enabling prioritisation of bandwidth to those applications that need it 3. Symmetry of bandwidth - i.e. greater upload bandwidth to match download bandwidth, a key progression for the streaming and interactive applications that will become the norm."

They also indicated that it is unlikely that households will ever be connected by fibre optics from the cabinet, in common with most of Europe.
