Slow Broadband after cutting and rejoining BT wire

[link to this post]

Hi,

I wanted to move my BT Master socket out of my Hallway and into my attic.

I live in a Bungalow and the BT wire comes from the attic through the corner of the ceiling of my Hallway and connects to the master socket on the wall.

So I cut the wire to the master socket, leaving about 4 foot of wire connected to the socket, pulled the rest of the wire back through into the attic and then carefully rejoined the original wire the the wire emanating from the master socket.

I thought I had done a decent job because the phone works, with no crackle and I still have a broadband connection. The only trouble is that the speed has fallen from 4GB to 100KB.

I should be grateful for anyone's advice.

Thanks

Pod

Have you checked the actual connection or sync speed?

You might have managed to mess up your IP Profile - so if your sync is normal this will recover.

NB. I take it you know you're not supposed to interfere with BT's Master Socket.

Thanks for the quick response. I wondered whether it might be something to do with the IP profile. May be something shorted when I cut the wires.

I didn't know that you shouldn't mess with the master socket, I have since discovered that on these forums.

In my defence, I didn't know what a master socket was and as there were three sockets in my house and this one wasn't used, I thought it would be ok to move it.
Of course, BT won't have sympathy with that explanation.

How should I check the actual connection or sync speed? I was just using a broadband speed test, which presumably isn't the same thing?

Many thanks

Pod

The line stats are normally found in the web interface on the router.
Have a look here for some help on getting info.

As RockH has pointed out you need to look in your router/modem.

Or, as long as you are sync'd higher your speeds will return - but it can take UP TO five days...

Here are my test results:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 113 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3776 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

I looked on my router and it is configured for 135 kbps which I guess is the problem.
Cutting the wire mut have caused something to be overloaded but if it will adjust back to normal after a few days, then that is a relief.

Thanks for all the helpful advice.

I joined the cables using one of those plastic casings which have two rows of screwall them.s embedded in plastic, not sure what you call them.

Let's hope that the screws don't work loose, or you could be facing a £200+ charge for BT to find where the fault is.

It would be better to use jelly crimps, like the ones BT use.
