why sheffield node and not leeds

[link to this post]

HI,this may sound a strange question but a while ago i had a hack attempt on my pc the type that asks me to download anti virus to rid my pc of an infection.
i spotted the fake atempt but on the left side of my browser it said my location was rotheram sheffield, this i did not think much of however i noticed when using google serch results come back from the sheffield area and also facebook results etc.
im finding this strange as i live in leeds.
any ideas as to why i am being diverted to sheffield.

Which ISP are you with?

Some IP blocks have geographic areas associated with them - which is why you see different areas when sites are using Geo targeting to display their ads.

The other possible answer is that someone who had that IP before you, might have been based in Sheffield and they used a service that would pass that information to the likes of MaxMind to update their IP location database.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though.

Geolocation is basically a trick. The Internet was never designed to provide that information and applications use a variety of methods to basically try and guess. They usually get the country right (but not always even that) but anything other than country is very hit and miss. It often depends what information the owning ISP has put in a database and quite often if they put a town/city they will put their HQ. That saves them the bother of having to update the information any time an IP address is assigned to someone else.

Bottom line:Don't worry about it smile
