Upstream suddenly dropped?

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

Hope you can help me on this one - over the past two days, my upstream has suddenly dropped from a consistent 448kbps to speeds varying from 150-256kbps. I notice that the upstream SNR is now also sitting at around 6db, whereas I think it used to be about 27db. Downstream is OK, but attenuation has improved from 51db to 47db. Prior to this, my line has synced at a solid 6mbps.

I've tried two different routers, currently using a 2Wire HGV2700 and have made no cabling alterations. Router is plugged straight in to the master NTE with a service specific face plate, so no extensions or filters.

Line stats are as follows:

Anyone? frown

The connection has synced back up at the correct 448kbps upstream on a few occasions today with an upstream SNR of 28db - however, it has dropped out several times and is now back at a 6db SNR with upstream sync of 160kbps...

For what it's worth, I have also noticed that there is a really noticeable hiss from the router that can be heard on the line when it is syncing at the lower speed - tried with a different SSFP to no avail.

Thanks
Chris

Hi ChrisH,

The most probable causes are:

Filter dying; have you tried a new one?

Modem dying, again have you tried another one?

Do you have a Master socket (NTE5) with a test socket inside?

Sounds like you have an intermittent connection caused by a corroded joint somewhere. This could be anywhere between you master socket and the exchange. You need to get your ISP involved, who will get BT on the case.

Had a similar issue with Entanet, who were useless in dealing with it & allowed BT to fob them off - eventually phoned the complaints dept at BT, was lucky & got someone there who had been a faults manager & he raised a fault based on it being intermitently noisy (there was a background beep tone) - local engineer found nothing but got permission to eavesdrop onto the line & heard the tone! - to his credit he kept searching & eventually found a cable fault in a duct - DESPITE all BT's previous tests claiming there was no fault. Was so sick & tired of BT/Enta that I have moved the line to Be/O2 who are excellent - line speeds hugely increased, no lag - just a completely different standard of internet connection!
