Issue with new 'MAX' product

[link to this post]

For years i've had demon Internet with no problems, we're at the end of the line and get a 500kbps connection.

I decided to 'upgrade' the demon product to a business max 2000 product, this was solely because of the annoying 50gb cap that once exceeded throttles you down to 128kb/s.

I've had this over a week, everyday it disconnects randomly, the sync is anywhere from 223kbps to 896kbps, drops all the time. Before this, like i say ADSL was fine here for over 5 years on a regular adsl demon product.

Demon say their end is fine and my equipment is unaltered though i've checked and replaced the routers, filters etc. They sent out a BT engineer here, he did some tinkering, added a new openworld filtered faceplate and after he left 10 hours of bliss with 896kpbs sync....... till it dropped and now we're back where we started with all the problems.

Surely, this must be because of MAX not supporting a line this far away?

Any comments appreciated.

Max is doing what it should - providing the fastest speed that it can when your router/modem resyncs. Unfortunately it seems that you are on a long line which is susceptible to noise pickup and that higher speed cannout be sustained so it resyncs. Sometimes that new speed is less than the 512kbps which you used to have because the router/modem has to reserve the target noise margin set by the equipment at the exchange but the fixed speed link soldiered on with less margin (and possibly more errors).

Can you find and post your connection stats?

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

Assuming that your router/modem is connected to the filtered faceplate through a reasonably short lead it sounds like there is very little you can do to improve matters.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

One thing I also noticed currently the sync constantly changes on the downstream rate but he upload has never changed (often higher than the downstream rate)

Upstream uses the low frequencies which are not attenuated so much as the higher frequencies used for downstream. It is the loss of the higher frequencies with pulls down your capability from 8mbps to what you are getting.

Your upstream will be a lot higherr than you were getting. The 512kbps fixed speed service had 256kbps upstream. Standard BTw IPstream ADSL offers 448 but you appear to be on something different with 544kbps upstream (BTw do have an office product but I think that is 832kbps upstream).

Of course split differently your downstream would be higher which at the speeds you can get would be much more useful. In fact it looks to me like you were better off before but you may have problems reverting to that as I think you may now be on an LLU connection rather than Max which is a name used for the BTw product.

I have similar stats to those shown, and was getting a steady 2.5m download speed with AAISP
well worth trying them, 30 days contract only will "Fix" your line or money back guarantee,
you can't go wrong with AAISP

O2

It may be that AAISP could help but...

In reply to a post by sidneyk:

... means nothing because...

DSL Attenuation: 63.5 dB 31.5 dB

.. are just the highest values that the router can report. The true attenuations could be much higher.
