Margin resets & a split BT cable (junc box to Master socket)

After having some noise issues early this year which sort of went away largely (lift and shift and other stuff done, not sure this really solved the issue tbh) my connection has started to deteriorate over the past 2 weeks.
I've gone from 6db profile to a 15db profile in that time without me doing anything to it, just letting it run its course.

I've found however that the multicore BT cable between the outside cable -> inside cable junction box (white matchbox size) and the master socket has split open along at least 12 inches....it must of been done more than 5yrs ago as it has what looks like some cellotape trying to hold it together. Do you think this would cause a problem with my connection (not sure any actual cores are damaged as i think the outer sheath has split due to it being under the carpet where you walk into the lounge)?

I will try and check the rest of the cable up to the white junction box this afternoon.

Solid core cables don't like being run under carpets. The cores will eventually snap. So could be an issue, BT wouldn't install a cable like that, they prefer to surface mount.

I've checked the rest of the length and it also has a sheath split where the cable runs near the downstairs WC.

I was thinking of having the master socket moved anyway, is the small junction box required or could the cable from the pole come in directly to the back of the master socket if the master socket was mounted on an external wall?

If you haven't got a modern style BT Master Socket then I would recommend getting one fitted.

OK i do have NTE5 and usually use a filter faceplate (have both a BT and an ADSLnation one) and a dedicated screened ADSLnation cable but its not currently fitted as i'm redecorating (its been like that for the last 2 months) so i'm using a normal phone line with a filter on the end in the standard NTE5 faceplate. Not ideal but it has been ok up to just recently with no other changes.

Is your NTE5 fitted after your split cables etc.?

If so are you saying the cables go under your carpet on-route to your NTE5?
This doesn't sound like how BT would install things...

drop wire -> junction box (matchbox size located in hallway) -> multicore cable (sheath split in 2 places) under carpet -> NTE5

Question is now can the drop wire go straight into an NTE5 if the NTE5 is mounted on an external wall or MUST it go into the little junction box first? I'm thinking of alternatives to the current layout as i need the junction box and NTE5 moving in future for when i change the hallway to large skirting to match the rest of the house!

No you don't need the 'junction box'.

To me, it doesn't sound as if you have an 'officially installed' NTE5 as BT wouldn't run the cable under the carpet...

Well i've no idea, it was like that when i moved in 5yrs ago plus BT have been out and replaced the junction box when i was having issues earlier in the year and nothing was mentioned.
