My line stats

[link to this post]

Hello everyone

Im new to the forum and have been looking around at all the info on the site which is excellent.

I have seen a few members post up their line stats and have had feedback from others on whether the figures are right. Was hoping I could post mine up here too and get your opinions.

Been with o2 for over 2 years and no problems whatsoever apart from having a crossed line a few weeks back which was sorted. But it seems that I now connect at router and get around 11meg down and 1.1meg up. whereas before i used to get 14 or so meg down. Im using the supplied white thompson router and have asked o2 to set the noise margin to 3db.

Here are the stats, what do you guys think??

Uptime: 0 days, 15:56:19

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,361 / 16,864

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,403 / 13,497

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 15.0 / 28.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 3.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 12 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 3 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 921 / 1,311,070

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 921 / 288

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 3,964 / 210

Any thoughts / suggestions much appreciated.

Looks fine.

1 Loss of Signal Local errors. These are okay as rare one-offs, but should not occur regularly.

3 Error Second in total. These are okay as one-offs, but should not occur regularly.

Downstream sync speed is within 5 percent of the average for your attenuation (28.5dB).

Expected download speed at your current sync rate: 1.40 MB per second (or 11487 kbit)

Expected upload speed at your current sync rate: 149.26 KB per second (or 1194 kbit)

Signal Noise Margin Down (3.5dB) is a little bit lower than average.

The average upstream sync speed attained by other users with the same upstream attenuation as you (15dB) is 1239 kbit (164 kbit or 13 percent slower than your connection). If you are using Fast Path, then that would explain the increase.

Problem: 12 Loss of Framing errors, which should ideally never or rarely occur.

Problem: Signal Noise Margin Up (3.5dB) is extremely low.

Problem: There are some FEC Up errors. FEC errors are *corrected* errors, so these are probably nothing to worry about. Speedtouch routers have a habit of misreporting FEC errors anyway.

Thanks for the response Batboy. Much appreictaed mate.

Quite relieved all is as it should be, well most of it anyways. As for the errors, what effect would i see when surfing??? I havnt really noticed any problems at all really since Ive asked for the noise margin to be dropped to 3db. O2 are pretty cool with dropping it in my experince.

I have it connected right at the master socket where the line enters the house. Is there anything else I should do to make sure the set up is as good as it gets. Sorry for the noob questions btw. What should i do about the SNR? Batboy you say its very low mate?

Cheers.

I thought I should post up a more recent snapshot of the router stats as the first one i posted at the start of the thread was only where the router had been powered up for a few hours.

This is what is looks like about 24 hours power on:

Uptime: 0 days, 23:25:48

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,348 / 16,851

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,403 / 13,497

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 15.0 / 28.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.0 / 3.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 12 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 4 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1,317 / 1,708,270

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 1,317 / 468

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 13,297 / 346

Increasing the noise margin (it currently appears you're on a 3dB target) will involve contacting your ISP (unless it's BE, where you'll be able to set it via their website).
It will, however, reduce your speed (probably by 1 or 2 Mbps).
If I were you, I wouldn't bother as your line seems pretty stable anyway (with few errors) and would only go for a higher margin if your line keeps dropping sync.

To be fair, you did ask them to lower it wink I guess you will only see problems if there is a lot of noise on your line - this being RF noise. You may be able to hear it on a AM MW radio, or graph it using Routerstats.

yes, thats correct, i did ask them to lower it. It was on 6db before i believe and I was achieving around 9meg i think.

Not so funky then. That's too many errors.

Looks to be the output of a Speedtouch/Thomson router.
IIRC the HEC error count tends not to reset to zero on resync and a few hundred CRC errors are not too bad over a 24 hour period (albeit slightly unusual on such a short line).
I have 10 million FEC errors and about 20,000 CRC errors over a similar time period (but that's because I'm driving my 56dB line hard @ 4.8Mbps sync with a 3dB margin). Still it doesn't seem to affect speed or latency too badly.
