setup two access points connected via ethernet cable

[link to this post]

Before you go on if this is something i can find in google please tell me what to search for. thanks

to put it simply

[wireless computer]----[thomson router(DOWNSTAIRS)]----[wireless modem router(belkin,linksys,netgear)(UPSTAIRS)]

or if the above doesn't work

[wireless computer]----[wireless router(belkin,linksys,netgear)(DOWNSTAIRS)][thomson modem router(UPSTAIRS)]

I have a thomson tg585v7 from my ISP and it is really [censored] as you might know already it keeps on rebooting when i am streaming videos from one computer to another among so many other issues, i think my firmware version is 8.2.5.0.

So i have decided to get a new modem router maybe a belkin, linksys or netgear(can you recommend a brand and model please).

After i setup my new modem router i would like to use the thomson router as a wireless access point downstairs. I would be connecting the thomson router to the new router via ethernet since thats probably the best way to get good connection(is it possible to do this). Now i need help in configuring this setup if it is possible or if you have any other recommendations please do help me.

The main reason i am doing this is to get wireless access downstairs, since my router is upstairs and i dont get good coverage downstairs.

After this is done hopefully will i get any problems from the thomson router even though it is not the modem anymore?

The other thing that i might do is just get a new wireless access point and use the thomson as a modem.

Thanks,
Adem

No problems at all - you need to disconnect the original Thomson from the incoming line.

Look at the new modem and check the local IP range it uses. 192.168.xx.xx or 10.0.xx.xx

Access the Thomson through tits web interface and change the IP to one in the range of the new router. Then turn OFF DHCP server in the Thomson. Save the config.

Connect the new modem/router to the line and let it boot.

Connect the Thomson using the Ethernet cable - Port1 as some Thomson only have auto detect and uplink on that port, back to teh new router and off you go.

Connect via Ethernet to the new router and try to access the Thomson using the new IP address you have given it. The sort out your wireless settings on both

alright thanks and i will be having wireless access on both routers right?

now can you recommend a good stable modem router with wireless capabilities either belkin, linksys or netgear only these brands are available in my country.

If i get a 802.11n modem router will that be an issue for the thomson since it is only 802.11b/g.

thanks

what about the SSID should they both have the same SSID or different ones?

No, but use separate channels

I'd advise the opposite - same channels, different SSID, unless you plan to use both WAPs heavily at the same time. In many crowded urban areas, you will be lucky to find two unused wi-fi channels. Many devices will automatically seek out the best quality connection and automatically connect to it.

i dont live in a crowded area and the only WiFi network i get in my house is my own. So in this case would you recommend same SSID different channels.

What is the advantage of having different channels?
