Disconnections and noise margins - Orange

[link to this post]

Hi everyone,

Ive started to suffer from repetitive disconnections recently and after pretty must exhausting all avenues of help from BT and Orange ive started to look for help elsewhere.

Im no expert but no mug either and would love for someone to review my line stats as i have a very high upstream noise margin and nothing ive found has discussed a reading above 50 (mine is over 2500)!

Orange are now telling me its RFIs which are causing the problem but i have my doubts and any advise would really be appreciated. If ive not provided something i should let me know and ill do best to fill the gaps.

Im on Orange with 8MBs and using a Gigaset SE 572 WLAN dsl btw

Downstream rate: 7658 kbps
Upstream rate: 604 kbps
PPPoE pass-through: Enabled
ADSL Line
Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 7658 kbps (downstream) / 604 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 25 dB (downstream) / 2649 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 23 dB (downstream) / 11 dB (upstream)
Output power: 22 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)
Address Translation (NAT)
Status: Enabled
NAT table: No entries
Dynamic DNS
Status: Disabled

Many thanks in advance for any help/advice blush)

Did Orange provide this router? It looks broken.

Hiya,

they did over a year ago and it was fine for ages, then some problems occurred and they replaced it. Same issues though with the new one. They're sending out a different make/model but i'm not hopeful.

Are you only paying for a capped 8 Meg ADSL2+ service?

Cuz all your stats looked good for that, except the Up NM. That could well just be a router glitch. I think I may have seen it very occasionally. Have you tried rebooting the router a few times to see if it goes?

You could expect about 19 Meg on ADSL2+ if you weren't capped.

The broadband is free through work (work for Microsoft) so couldn't say for sure but can find out. I reboot the router between 5 and 25 times daily! Can be no problems for a week then it looses connection every 5 minutes. It's been ok tonight but that it changes like the wind.

Do the disconnections always coincide with the high Up NM?

I would have thought not. My experience with the high NM is that it is just the router misreporting occasionally and does not affect anything.

Might be time to look at your own wiring. Have you removed ring wire? Are you correctly filtered and have replaced them? Have you tried to plug into hidden test socket? ...

Not noticeably and the high Up NM is constant, never drops to "normal" levels.

BT guy said wiring was rubbish in front room so moved router to hallway (no difference) and then master test socket (no difference).

The thing is that all was ok for well over a year and then bam, been shocking ever since.

p.s i've been checking the router system log and have this repetitive error logged

10/19/2010 21:18:11 TR069:Sending inform message.
10/19/2010 21:18:11 TR069:Inform Fail!!(Invalid URL or ACS unreachable)

Any ideas?

TR069 is a remote configuration system, so is not down to sync events.

What makes you think it is the DSL resyncing, rather than some other issue like router simply crashing, or an ISP side issue.

if this were radio frequency interference, one would expect to see the downstream noise margin varying. Willing to bet the upstream figure needs dividing by 100 to give a correct number, i.e. a router GUI bug

Process of elimination maybe, unlikely the router is crashing as tried 2nd one same result. ISP has technically eliminated themselves as being responsible and pointed the finger towards RFIs which cause the router to drop the connection.

Time to monitor the noise margins manually, if RFI then you would expect to see some fluctuation, it must be pretty bad to drop your line given the apparent decent noise margin for downstream.

Personally I would not trust an ISP to rule themselves out, particularly Orange. As for the modem, if its a software related crash two models of the same brand are very likely to suffer the same software bugs
