Help please BT wrong statistics for my line?

[link to this post]

Hi,
I need some advice please, I used to have my phone line with bt and o2 broadband at 4.5mb then sky took over my line and I started getting lots of nuisance calls so I tried to get them to change my number but they said bt has to so I cancelled sky talk, the line was deactivated but was never disconnected at the exchange I reconnected to bt and was given a new number but now when I check with different ISPs Im being told the max my line can support is 0.5mb and that my noise figure is more than 75db and adsl max speed is 0mb? Their is clearly an error but when I spoke to bt he didnt understand what I was getting at. Im around 893 meters away from the exchange and Iv checked neighbours phone numbers and they get stats for 4-6mb so what has happened to my line since switching back to bt.

If I dont put my phone number in, just enter my address I get an estimation for 5mb from sky and 4-5 from other ISPs

I would appreciate any advice please because virgin, sky, aol, bt and o2 are saying I can only get 0.5mb, talktalk is saying I can get 0mb and orange is saying their is something on your line incompatible with our broadband, BT themselves say due to the distant from the exchange you will need an engineer to visit your line supports max 1mb adsl and 256kb adsl max.

Heres my tel no information from sam knows:

BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Banbury telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support a 1Mbps or greater ADSL connection.
Standard ADSL RAG results
 You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 512kbps ADSL
(Engineer visit likely)
You may be able to receive 256kbps ADSL
(Engineer visit likely)
» Your BT ADSL code is: AEAEAEZ
» Matched result using the phone you provided

You are approximately 893 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

And heres what kitz says for my phone number

Telephone No: Xxxx
Postcode: Xxxx

Phone & Postcode search OK
Exchange Information
Exchange: Banbury BT Code: SMBB
Location: Castle Street, OX16 8PE
Distance:- Direct: 899 metres
(appx)*
By Road: 1.45 km
Status
ADSL enabled: July 30, 2001
DSL Max enabled: March 30, 2006
SDSL enabled : Enabled
21CN due : (PSTN) N/A
21CN WBC (Broadband) Enabled 31.05.09
Broadband Access
Market 3

Available ISPs Other Broadband Technology & LLU Providers
Although your exchange is BT owned, this does not limit you to just BT Broadband and a vast range of ISPs are able to supply you with adsl.
Available ISPs are too numerous to list, but some examples would be: Zen, Plusnet, IDNet, Enta, etc

BT Line Speed Estimation
Fixed ADSL: 1024 kbps (1 Mb)
DSL Max: 0 kbps (0 Mb)
21CN WBC : Not Available
Important: The above figures are obtained from the BTw database, which is often conservative.
DSLmax speeds are best guess based on the surrounding area and cannot take into effect individual line conditions which may effect the result such as the type of equipment you use or other issues which may affect the Signal to Noise Ratio.
If you already have adsl then you may be interested in Max dsl speed calculator which may give a better indication of your lines capability.
RAG Test Results
Fixed: Long line green for 1Mbps, Red for 2Mbps
radsl: Line has over 75dB loss, ADSL unlikely, but will be tested by an engineer on-site
MAX: Max may not be available - tests pending
TPON: No info in database
Check: No compatability issues

Which ISP is saying your noise is 75dB, since they are wrong - noise cannot exceed 75dB, they are confusing attenuation. The word loss means attenuation.

In the first few days/week or two for a new phone number it will often give wrong database results, it is a case of ignore those and go ahead with the order. The ADSL service will perform pretty much the same as you used to get before all this moving around.

NOTE: If Sky was who you paid voice line rental to, then it was their responsibility with the nuisance calls.

Which providers have refused to take an order from you?

Hey, thanks for the reply, the ISPs havent said the noise is 75db the samknows and kitz website says that when I enter my phone number, a couple of ISPs BT and Virgin however state that due to the long distance away from the exchange the maximumn speed will be 0.5-1mb, Im not that far from it 899meters line distance 1.4 km road travel distance.

my two preferred LLU choices orange and o2 wont let me take bb with them at all.

this is basically what I get for the following ISPs

o2 refused a connection stating not available in my area, I used to be with them and funny my neighbours o2 routers (2 of them) show up in my wireless range.

Orange didnt refuse but wouldnt accept either stating on their website, after I enter my phone number that their is something incompatible with broadband on my line and i have to have it removed first..

Talk talk (cant go with them because im in a new bt contract for the landline so just wanted to test and it said service unavailable in your area)

Opal said connection speed will be 0.00mb

Demon your line will support a maximum of 0.6mb

BT Maximum 0.5mb (due to long distance from exchange & that an engineer may have to come out because of this),

Sky 0.5mb max

Virgin 0.5 max due to long distance from exchange.

my sister is on the same exchange but is 1.5km line distance and 3.5km road distance away and she gets 3.5mb with o2.

I hope its just wrong database info like you said it might be and that it soon updates/corrects itseld.

oh aol wont give me a speed lol just says i can connect with them dont know if thats a good or bad thing.

They may have meant there is no spare capacity available in your exchange.

The checker not being accurate just after a number change is well known, and tells you lots about an ISP sales team when they simply say 'computer says no'.

Procedures are available to place orders when this does happen, so it is a case of making sure the ISP sales team is aware that this is a newly activated line.

BTW Its not 75dB noise, it is 75dB loss. You are mis-interpreting it, and they are just estimating this based on the line length data, it is NOT a real time test. A case of database needs to update to reflect the numbers real location.

Thanks for explaining about the db loss smile

Regarding o2, space cant be it because they would then offer the o2 access pack but they arent.

Just a quick question since I was with sky talk before cancelling the line and going to bt is it possible that my line is connected to skys equipment still or is this imposssible? Im asking because I got a call today from sky offering me broadband at 3.5mb on the LLU service which isnt even enabled on my exchange apparently, I refused and then checked the sky website and its offering me this, up until today sky stated Im not in a sky broadband network area and only offered me the sky connect service. Iv checked and all other ISPs are still stating not available or 0.5-1mb for my number.

so could I still be connected via skys equipment even though my line rental is with bt or does sky just use a more upto date database?

Im confused?

If Sky LLU was not at your exchange, then your phone was always going via BT, just that the billing and support and call routing was handled by Sky
