But there were none on the first set, and a fair few on the second, 4 mins later..... ? The router is either reporting them wrongly, or they have been clocked up in the first 4 mins.

The set of results with no HEC errors was very shortly after router restart. Perhaps the router hadn't been sent the exchange HEC errors at that stage? I'm not sure how often the local/remote end exchange error stats.

To be honest, them stats look fine for the uptime

Ignore the Up HEX errors.

Any chance of getting a photo of the wires within that box? It may just unscrew.

You could try setting your line to standard ADSL (g.dmt) rather thanADSL2+. It may be better on your line and some routers allow you to select that setting.

Did you do the quiet line test? Dial 17070 option 2.

Yes i did the quiet line test which i posted.
my router is just the standard o2 supplied router so i dont think i can switch to adsl from adsl2+
the fact that its now sync at 7MB ish is in line with what estimates says so thats fine.
unless of course i could get more? but i dont understand the line stats whether it can give me more speed.

is it necessary to open the socket further to see the wires?
what am i looking for? and what does the wires tell me/u?

The speed looks ok and not really massive amount of CRC errors.

You tell me whats wrong with them?

I'm on O2 but use my old Netgear (O2 still in its box). I don't know if the O2 box can be overridden.

The 7 Mbps sync is in line with your attenuation. You have more CRC errors than I'd like suggesting noise on the line.

I was wondering if you had a poor connection or missing wire, but given that your phone works that seems unlikely (ADSL only needs one wire connected, albeit much degraded, phone needs both).

Consider RouterStats http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm to monitor your line to see if a noise pattern emerges.

I switch my router off overnight.

Normal for O2 (or BE) with broadcom at both ends on ADSL2+ interleaved.

The O2 router (speedtouch) is just reporting the corrections, and its reported to have bugs in the display part too.

For comparison here's my stats, on slightly older firmware (BE) that doesn't try to predict (badly) potential speed:

Uptime: 5 days, 7:28:39
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,325 / 16,956
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.5 / 24.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.5 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 5 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 192 / 11,198,571
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 192 / 508
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 33,841 / 401

James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM
