Why doesn't my telephone line keep cutting off

About a week ago all of a sudden the phone rang so I picked it up only to find nobody was there. After that that particular phone died. When I took it apart there a quite a strong burning smell. We also keep getting noise on the line. Similar to the noise experienced when you don't have an adsl filter fitted. But it's intermitent. Sometimes it can be very bad so you can't hear what the person is saying. Other times it's fine.

Could it be my voip spa or is there something wrong with the phone line?

Just now it just cut off then the phone line went totally dead for a minute or so then recovered

Dial 17070 take the option for the quiet line test I think it's still option 2, to do this you should connect a working phone to the Test socket within the master socket and if there is still noise then it would be on the Openreach side of the master socket and can be reported as a line fault and you shouldn't be charged for an Openreach visit.

The TEST socket is the one at the back right hand side of the image as you look at it.

I would log it with your phone provider, was there a nearby storm at the time?

Rule out the voip side by disconnecting it and removing its power brick.

If there was a surge on something enough to produce burning you may have other devices affected, so worth unplugging stuff to make sure its not a duff power supply generating the noise.

A power supply can still be powering its appliance/device but be suffering a fault that creates extra noise that gets picked up by the phone/ADSL
